Anyone here doing it as a hobby?

I'm thinking of starting Blacksmithing as a hobby. Will go shopping for some tools and an anvil over the weekend. Seems like I'll have to make my own forge though.

I'm not going to claim to be a blacksmith by any means of the imagination but I figured I need a hobby where I can take out my frustrations and I think banging on raw hot metal might just be it. I have watched a few videos online and it does seem like something one can really enjoy and create things form metal scraps to your hearts content. Thinking of starting to forge my own knives just because I can :p

Its something I have always liked the idea of, but I prefer working with wood to working with metal.

But there are some really cool alternative ideas for forging out there.
check out thekingofrandom on youtube, he has done quite a few.
like taking appart a microwave and making an arch forge.
turning a heat resistant brick into a smithing point.
having a little forge that stores away neatly in the garden.

but good luck dude I would be interested to see what you make and how it all turns out.

You in CPT? They used to run short blacksmith courses in Observatory....an old link: http://www.sandstone-estates.com/index.php/railway-heritage-58/39-railway-heritage/464-htn-47-the-blacksmiths-workshop-is-offering-in-two-training-courses-next-year

I think they'd probably be happy for you to pop in regardless of whether you do a course or not.

Has the term not yet changed to "Previously Disadvantaged Smithing" yet?
Love the idea. But the Eskom costs of firing up a furnace... yoH ! :wtf:

Gas, or coals. Currently thinking about gas, however they say coals are better but messy. I don't want to keep cleaning ash every day instead of smelting and hammering metal.

Do yourself a favor watch this guys video on how to make your own furnace at home. Please also post pictures I would love to see.

I've wanted to do this for some time now but I live in a complex. I think the noise levels will make the neighbors a bit mad.

Friend of mine does it.

Made a forge out of some gas fittings, fireproof bricks and an old metal paint drum.

Yea, will do. Was the reason behind this thread. Will probably also do a few videos as I try and fail/win at this. I was watching a guy make a knife yesterday out of fish hooks. Yes, FISH HOOKS! I then realised the versatility of this. And then the freedom you have to make things you can use every day. Will go to builders and the likes over the weekend. See how much money I can spend :D

Don't, decent ones are farking expensive. Scour online classifieds for anvils as you can pick up some beast anvils at bargain prices if you are patient, that's what my blacksmith mate says anyway. He now hunts for these things online and sell them at a pretty profit as you can see on his site.

What will the neighbours say?

I would be like a crazed wounded wildebeest if my neighbour started hammering steel like it was the end of the world every Saturday morning or evening after work...

Unless you live on a smallholding you are gonna have problems with neighbours.

As long as I don't bang on a Sunday morning (Next to a church) I should be fine. I can't be arsed what my neighbour on the other side says.
