I have a 9860 that I bought brand new and on day 6 it nuked. So did the seller. I have sent it to 2 repair shops only to have it come back BER. ie Beyond Economical Repair. Motherboard hardware failure.
This leads me to think that their "Technicians" are only board replacers and have no multimeters or soldering irons on their work stations.
Anyone know of a repair shop that does Level 3 repairs? Replacing the motherboard is too expensive.

This device was not brought into SA by any network operators.
BlackBerry devices warranty are solely at the discretion of the network operators.
 
I know that but it was not my question.

Thanks Shani. Took it to a guy in Cape Town. The Flash Chip has blown and he ordered a new one.
 
Very interesting find. The actual cause of the BB failure was the charger. It is a genuine BB charger but the voltage was too high and it blew the "power management circuit".
 
With all your investment millions (if not hundreds) one would think you would have been able just buy a new phone ;)

Actually I did but may as well have the other one repaired as it is brand new. For good measure, I chucked in a touch screen laptop for me and a Galaxy S4 for my daughter.

With the scale of the components on the boards these days it really isn't feasible to repair them. Those boards are machine made with precision instruments, trying to fix it will be like trying to perform brain surgery with a jack hammer.
 
Not exactly. There are many micro electronic geeks that actually repair to hybrid component level. Surf through this site and you will see what these geeks can do. They are mostly Asian and fix ANY component on the circuit boards. The guy I sent it to said that if he cannot repair it he will give me a new one for free.

Many repairs require a proper lab environment, especially on micro-level or smaller scale, remember you have components such as single-molecule diodes. Oh, you do know what I mean by lab environment?

So this guy who may not be able to repair your 9860, promised to give you a new one should he not be able to do the repairs? Bwhahahahahahaha!

Things are done much simpler nowadays. With Blackberries you run the diagnostics software and it will show you what circuit or chip failed the test. Mine showed Flash Rom Failure. He replaced it but still not working so he now has to replace all the associated components.
He does not have a circuit diagramme for it as it is not a SA available phone and must now wait for his overseas contact to get the details.

I have seen his lab. Three employees and about 6 students and repair "Beyond Economical Repair" cellphones and tablets for MTN, VC etc.

It sounds more like your ROM is corrupt, maybe a dodgy seller. Should I be correct, you can manually Flash the current ROM. Google have all the answers… and Crackberry.

Lab environments to do repairs are related to ingress protection.

I am quite conversant with flashing BB's. Done it many times. This one is definitely a hardware failure.
