Could some one please help.

I need to block a few sites at my office for some employees.

We are currently using firefox and I know on IE you can set the contents and have it password protected.

No there is alot of add ons for Firefox but the problem is nothing stop the user to just uninstall the add ons and the filtering is gone.

I have tried the HOST file route but it just does not work and I dont know why.

Is there anything I can use either in the firefox config file or registry.
If there is any third party software that might be free or open source will work to.

Thanks in advance

Hosts file should work, that's probably the most robust method to block sites.
Check if you're using a proxy server on the network and go that route.

Hosts files aren't going to work - 2 mins on google and they will know how to fix it.

You need to install a proxy.

1) It will give you the ability to generate logs to see who's abusing the net.
2) It caches content so your internet usage will drop
3) You can block sites on categories.

There's a multitude of free software you can use for this. Have a look at ipcop/smoothwall - its a breeze to setup.
