Blocking youtube and porn sites

Hi All,

With these routers you get today i see it has an option to block these sites but it doesnt work.

Is there a DNS service i can use to block yotube and porn sites but preferably per device?

There is software you can use but another simple way is to just edit the hosts file.

C:\Windows\System32\drivers\etc




You will see it does not have an extension but can be edited in notepad

You can add entries for specific sites and you redirect them back to the local machine so they wont resolve :

Pornhub.com 127.0.0.1

I block youtube like this but because there are an infinite amount of porn sites its a lot harder to manage.

Block all outbound DNS and make your router use those DNS servers as its forwarders.
Use your router as the DNS server.

For Youtube it kind of depends on what kind of devices you want to block it on but there is time restrictions on Apple and depending on if you just want to enforce safe search on Youtube/Google etc then you can follow this:

There are DNS services that can block these for you across your home LAN

OpenDNS
Preferred DNS Server: 208.67.222.123
Alternate DNS Server: 208.67.220.123

Else you may elect to run a local DNS filter such as Adguard / PiHole and manage the blocklists from there

You can use pi-hole and a custom filter for youtube and use 1.1.1.3 as the upstream DNS.

If its to protect kids maybe look at this project https://eblocker.org/en/ Install on a pi and a bit more involved but is extensive.

If the problem is your network, and they connect other devices to it, not just computers, you will need a dedicated firewall. Also, creating a policy for thumb drives will be a must. Portable browsers like Tor can essentially bypass almost anything, it is very hard to stop it. Kicking devices like phones and tablets off the network is the only way if they are allowed to use their private devices.

You're going to have to do it on your router firewall. A DNS can by bypassed.

If this is for a raging hormonal horny teenager you won't stop them on a mobile network, but the data will be expensive so there is that.

I am not going to test the waters thanks. Youtube definitely works though coz i always have the tab open to watch 320d videos.
