Sadly, guavamint is too thick-headed to foresee the disaster that it is plunging SA into - clearly more traditional modes of transport [buses & trains] are required, not only for 2010 but for the here & now as well...

I think government sees the looming disaster, they just don't have the balls required to deal with it. Last time the taxi industry rioted about the taxi recap, the government caved in. Now that a precedent has been set, the taxi drivers won't back down unless the government gets brutal.
I personally favour a no tolerance approach. If a protesting taxi driver does something stupid, give him the maximum punishment allowed by law. No exceptions!

At the end of the day goverment will back down and pay the taxi drivers more and guess who will be footing the bill? The taxpayer......, we always have to pay for screwups that the goverment makes.

The problem is that guavamint has never cracked-down on Blaxi drivers, which is why they continually break the law, which is mostly never enforced by Metro|Traffic Police, so Blaxi drivers have become a law unto themselves and a danger to everyone else.Hmmm well I'm with the SPCA on this - animals should be treated with love and respect, so I cannot condone treating Blaxi drivers with love and respect - they simply do not deserve it, and most are criminals in that they habitually break the laws of the road, and Blaxi drivers take the view that their passengers [paying customers] are livestock in a semi-mobile abattoir...

In some cases their passengers are in fact livestock

That's an excellent idea.

Force taxi recapitalization, the full 100% formalization of the taxi industry. Bring in the defence force to "keep the peace" and stop the riots. Show the damn taxi's we mean business. Obey the laws, or get out.

The army transport corps could be used as a "buffer" while the new system settles down.

Better yet, fck the taxi's. Implement a safe, reliable, clean bus system.

Easier said then done - but if the government folds again, we are stuffed.

Is our "defence force" up to that task even with all that investment .? How do you know they won't join in the riots. Toy toying it seems is hard to resist. Who would want to stand disciplined with all that gear when you could be jumping, singing and looking like an idiot.

Semi-true - I haven't seen any chickens, goats, or pigs giving Blaxi drivers the finger and then paying for the ride, these are more the paid-for-by-another-passenger-passengers...

What I find interesting about the strikingly lawless attitude of Blaxi drivers, is that they fail to recognise that their passengers hold considerably more power [should they choose to use it] - just imagine a country-wide boycott against Blaxis and their drivers - sure many people would not get to work, but they have the power to bring Blaxi drivers & guavamint & the private sector to their knees, if passengers counter-striked en masse against Blaxis and their drivers, then guavamint would soon have to provide transport alternatives that do not involve Blaxis...

So what are the livestock doing on the side of the road then .

Maybe the passengers just lack the necessary dose of propaganda to set them off. It seems when a "leader(Zuma)" is in trouble they all band together to voice their collective outrage but if their individual lives are at risk they are strangely impotent.

IC that would would be ok in a country were the law could be enforced, we have all seen it before boycott taxis they will stone and burn busses burn trains cause havoc and leave the commuter no other option but to use their service and then still raise the price. I remember buss drivers being shot not to long ago.

What amazes me is that in any semi sane society, any pillock who stands up and says that "blood will flow" would get arrested and tried for treason, (and hopefully shot). The whole taxi industry is one huge blot of corruption, mismanagement and lawlessness, and nobody ever does anything about it. Somebody wisely said that it's about time the passengers and taxi users started to do something about these cowboys and maybe the Metro Cameramen should start confiscating vehicles, locking away a few owners and crushing unroadworthy taxis (preferably with the driver inside). Its also time they started looking at crushing the lawlessness of the taxi's and start removing these fools from our roads and drumming the rule of law into their heads. But then pigs might fly.

With the ANC messing around with the black taxi industry they are stirring up serious trouble and it will probably put thousands of black taxi drivers and owners out of work.

The net result will be that blacks will end up with less transportation which will be more expensive in the next few years once this ANC law comes in.

Because of the taxi problems they did not collect garbage. Blacks were struggling to get transport to even go to work.

The ANC has limited understanding of economics. This will hit the blacks on a huge scale.
