So my friends pc has stopped working and he asked me to look at it for him.

Basically you turn the pc on, all the fans go on etc. but the pc screen remains black. The keyboard and mouse lights also stay off. I've tried using a different graphics card which made no difference. The PC doesn't beep so I doubt it's the ram. Like I said the screen remains completely black so no way to check the post screen/bios.

To me it seems like it can either be the mobo or cpu or maybe the hdd.

Yeah. Like I said the PC powers on and all the fans spin, lights on the mobo come on etc. but I will try that. If it is the motherbaord, I hope it didn't take the CPU with it.

Not the HDD, probs the m/board. Could also be the PSU. Try a different PSU.

+1. You will always be able to see the bios and tinker with settings without a HDD. If you want to test the RAM, take the modules out and then boot. If the motherboard screams at you, the chances are that the RAM is still fine. Reinsert.
If you have a spare PSU, try it. Double-check if a 12v ATX connection is needed on the mobo, as well as the normal connector.

Pop out all the RAM,if it buzzes/beeps/moans or anything else board is likely working,if not, replaaaaaace

Remove the RAM, mouse, KB and then boot it. See if it beeps now.
If it does not, mobo or cpu problems - Make sure the correct 4pin plug for the cpu power is plugged in.
If it does, return the mouse and kb. Try again.
If it still beeps, only return one ram module at a time. It could be the ram.

I want to try taking out the ram and seeing if the mobo beeps but a) his case nor my case has a speaker and b) the mobo never came with a speaker that can plug into the mobo. I assume any semi decent electronic store will have one of these speakers for sale?

Rather get a 12" sub, tweeters and an amp. That way you'll be sure to hear the beeps in great clarity :)

You don't need to buy a speaker, the board has ways of talking. If it wants to beep, it will. If it's not dead of course, which would be my guess.

Sigh looks like it is the mobo. Plugged in my fully workong Corsair psu and same symptons, screen just remains blank.

So anyone know where I can get a cheapish AM2+ mobo? :/
