Blown port on wireless ADSL router?

Been googling but could not find anything to help me.

Came home after a hectic storm only to find my PC is not connecting to my router with a cable, have tried all the ports on the router but still no luck. Now the thing is that the wifi is still working as I can still connect wirelessly with my laptop.

Is it possible that just the physical ports on the router could be blown? Everything else that was plugged in still works perfectly so surely if it was lightning there would be more damage?

It is possible that just the physical port interface circuit is fried. Have you tried resetting the router and running ping tests on each port? Checked the cables?

Yes, I've had the same issue on a Linksys WRT54GL. Blew two ports only and had damaged performance on the remaining ones. Wifi and WAN side were still fine. Switch ports have physical media adapter chips, often serving 2-4 ports depending on how cheap the router/switch is. If one of those blows, then it will take a batch of ports with it.

could be your ports on the router &/or the one on your PC....

If you can either borrow another router or take your PC to a friend & connect there.

Or if the laptop has a LAN port (most likely has) then try connect the two directly with a LAN cable (will probably have to be a cross over cable - some devices will accept a straight cable when on a 2 pc LAN)

cross over - hold cable tips next to each other, if the colours do not run in the same order = cross over. If not then straight.

You guys are brilliant! Dont know why I didnt think of trying to hook the laptop up with a cable - a :wtf: moment... At work now but will give it a try tonight.

Its quite an expensive (for me anyways) edimax router so will be pretty bummed if it is the ports on the router that have blown. What else I find weird is that the port activity light (or whatever its called) flashes the whole time like there is activity on the line even though my PC is off. So hopefully this is a good sign I just need a new network card.

As the wifi was still working I thought resetting it would not do anything - but will give it a try as well.
