Hey guys,

So I bought a Philips blu ray player this week and returned it within a day.

It played the videos alright but was horribly plasticky, and noisy to the point that I couldn't finish the film.

I'm looking for a decent player within the region of R1,000-R1,500. It's important to me that it's quiet, and naturally that it plays Blu-Ray content well. I'm not interested in value-add (3D, Network streaming, can make me coffee type stuff).

Does anybody have any recommendations of particular models or brands to look out for?

P.S. I DON'T want a PS3.

i think the Sony BDP S380 is quite a nice buy...good bang for buck. think Game has got them for R999 and Kalahari.com price is R899. can anyone comment on the quality of this Blu-Ray player?

My samsung is great and is in the range of +/- R1500. I dont have the model number off-hand. It needed a couple of firmware updates to really start playing all disks well.

What are you doing???

Buying a BR player is about as intelligent as purchasing a solar powered torch. Chocolate toaster or Cee Oh Cee Kay flavored lolly pop...

Buy a flippen PS3. Simple. It has a blu ray player already and you will have more use out of it.
But wait there's more...
Shock horror... You can also play games on it.

But wait there's more... It has a hard drive...

But wait there's more - You can play games ONLINE

But wait there's more... You can upgrade the HDD of a PS3 in less than 1 hour DIY

But wait there's more... You get my point.

Thanks for all the responses so far!

Isie - how does the BD5100 work for you? Is it noisy? Any hassles?

Thanks for all the drama-lama - but it's really not unintelligent to buy a blu-ray player over a PS3 at all. It's all about what you need and don't need. I'm not a console gamer, therefore I don't need or even desire a PS3.

Nope no hassels (Actualy very easy to use my wife who is not a tecno buff can use it so any one can :D ) and not noisy at all, use it in my bedroom so some times have to keep the video volume as soft as posible when the wifes asleep and dont hear the anything from the player.
And I know you not interested in the bells and whistles but its a prety descent media player plays almost all formats i have and can read FAT32 and NTFS HDD drives and they always releasing firmware updates - (just checked now and they relased one now)

Why don't you just get a PS3?

Sony S380 is excellent for under R1k, has a very fast loading time and is dead quiet.

I have a ps3 and a Sony s380 and I definitely prefer playing blurays on the s380. It's more refined as a bluray player and hopefully extends the life of my PS3. Also a s380 works with logitech harmony remotes out the box.

I have a Blu ray remote for my ps3. So it's all the same to me.

Great player. And selling at less than R1k lately. Better picture and features than some rather expensive players. Only snag is Xvid, no DivX. Highly recommended.

Fantastic. Thanks for all the great responses guys, really appreciate it.

Seems like I'll be getting that Sony S380! :)

Go for the samsung bd5100. Bought s380 and returned it coz it didn't pick up my ntfs drive. Samsung bd5100 is great. Picks up fat32 n ntfs easily. Also plays mkv videos wid no hassle.

Yeah I've been eyeing the BD5100 too... mostly cos my TV is a sammy so it'd be neat haha.

Your thoughts on the BD5100 in terms of noise (reading the disc), general usability, and blu ray playback quality?

Do you want 3D? Because if that Sony doesn't play 3D Blu-rays I'm sure Foto Discount world has a Samsung that does, for about R1000.

Also, since your TV is a Samsung, it will support HDMI-CEC (or Anynet+ as they call it)

Edit: Oops, guess not. But still, Samsung players are normally great quality.

Nah I'm not at all keen on 3D - thanks for the suggestion though!
