BluBox is a brilliant image compression tool used for compressing images into smaller formats for transfer online or backup purposes.
BluBox is a brilliant image compression tool used for compressing images into smaller formats for transfer online or backup purposes. Now usually when one does a review you would not start of the review with words like brilliant or fantastic unless the software is really impressive.
I downloaded the software from http://www.altonet.co.za/blubox.html and started a free trial to test the software.
The installation was not a problem. It did require an Adobe Flash installation but the under 2MB flash download didn’t hurt as I am on ADSL and even folks on dial-up would not have a problem with that.
Most Internet users tend to have Flash installed anyway, so that is not a major worry to me.
The user interface is straight forward. You may feel a little clumsy for the first five minutes as one tends to be with any new software but the introduction and help facilities even with the trial areimpressive.
I did mention at the beginning of this review that it does image compression. That is its main purpose, but it does binary software compression too in .zip format. The compressed image output carries a .blu extension.
The performance on image only archives is phenomenal. An archive of five Jpeg images totaling a size of 1.69MB compresses down to 384KB at maximum compression. It is truly brilliant!
There is a bit of image quality lost during compression in relation to the amount of compression you require. You can see it with slight pixilation on compressed images. A small deterrent to folks who require high definition images to remain intact.
There is a lossless compression option in the software, but it will not give you nearly the compression I mentioned earlier. The best you can do is to contain archives of such images in single zipped files, which does bring you a transfer advantage online, so not all is lost.
I see this software as perfect for sending images online. Compress and send. Simple! It even has functionality built in to help you email or upload your pictures to a website via FTP.
There are also facilities in the software for printing pictures straight out of an archive or if you want, you can view a slide show. Rotating the image together with a couple of basic image formatting tools can also be accessed and used on archived pictures.
There is also the option of password protecting archives, which can come in handy for folks who require a bit of security on their images.
If you send the archive to somebody to view, they will either need a copy of BluBox or download the free viewer online.
The South African price for online registration at the time of this review was R340.86 including VAT.
All in all a brilliant piece of software worth it’s metal!
