I have a prepaid electricity meter at my house that is a CoCT installed meter. For as long as I can remember, we have been purchasing electricity in R500 batches and that has been giving us 190.30 units (R2.62/unit) until the 26th of April. On April 26th (and every purchase since) that same R500 is now only providing 55.20 units (R9.05/unit). In the prepaid purchase breakdown there is a R355 service fee that has been levied on every electricity purchase since then, essentially rendering us getting a rate of R2.62/unit (R145/55.2units). This indicates that we haven't been charged a higher rate, but there is a new R355 service fee being charged on all of our purchases. Has anyone experienced this before? I can't find any information anywhere and this fee is becoming crippling. We are paying nearly 5 times the amount for 12 hours of power a day.

Blue Label Telecoms Service Fee

All rates are fully paid up and checked against the municipal rates tables. This is just a fee that has appeared on our prepaid purchases since 26 April 2023.

There is a new structure
A monthly levy has come into play ,thanks to nersa
Based on amp connection
ie indigent and those that choose can have a max 20A connection .and pay no levy but pay R3.?? Per unit
Then once over 20A a levy is payable , the documentation we got was also super unclear, ie you can jump in 10A steps
Pay R2.40per unit and the levy seems is made up of two parts R45 per 10A and a base availability fee (salt our documentation was super pathetic and did not make this base fee clear)
So if you have 60a connection
That is 4x 10a steps and the amps portion would add R180 plus the availability levy
I have a 3phase connection and if i remeber correctly my levy is R7?? Ish
So in some cases the electricity works out more expensive with the new layout but not that much

Though if you bought less units in one month ,and they could not deduct the whole levy (there is regulations about how much of the prepaid purchase they may deduct ie you always have to get some power units)
So if it is a case of you are essentially paying 2 levies one for the month you did not buy units and the current one
They may deduct from next purchases
but since you say you always buy R500 at a time i assume this not to be the case
As far as i get it your units should work out on avg levy+ unit price
A bit more expensive than before but not earth shatteringly more

Does anyone have any additional information on this? On the 10th of June when we did our now (almost twice a week R500 purchase of electricity) we miraculously received the full compliment of units (190 units). Since then though, we are back to 55 units/R500 and the same R355 service fee from Blue Label Telecoms is being applied. It is ridiculous now. No answers from BLT, CoCT or Eskom. Does anyone have the same problem?
