A black hole in the universe - JHB
Hey guys, so there are so many BR movies now, some old titles.
My question on this is surely these movies were not shot in HD so I assume they are remastered into HD content. Surely by up-scalling these movies the end result cannot be as good as a movie shot with HD cameras?

Thanks

What i thought is, they always had HD cameras in the movie making scene to begin with, and we only got the downgraded version on DVD's (and VHS) due to the high file sizes?

Not sure though that's just what i thought.

EDIT: Might be of interest

So according to that link, depending on what format the movie was shot in, even before 1955 the movies were HD+ in resolution?

Yeh - maybe they're already shot in HD res for cinema screens?

Movies are (were ?) usually shot with medium/large format film cameras. Digitised, these formats have massive amounts of detail, easily presentable as full HD format on digital equipment.

As an example, a "cheap" consumer, standard DX format DSLR (like a Nikon D40 or Canon 300D), easily manages 1500+ lines of vertical resolution, where HD is only 1080. 35mm film has similar resolution : http://filmschoolonline.com/sample_lessons/sample_lesson_HD_vs_35mm.htm

HD is nothing more than a resolution (720.lines on a 32" screen and 1080.lines on anything bigger) If i understand correctly, film would be at a higher resolution than 1080 anyway, and so digitizing old movies (70's) into HD wouldn't be that difficult.

*if you took the image you saw on a cinema screen from the 70's and put the same image on a 42" LCD its going to look like HD content?

I know what resolution is  :p
I'm under the impression that the type of equipment back then could not have had the same amount of performance and quality as the devices we have now.

M-Net HD are showing My Cousin Vinny this month, i think its the 1st older movie they are showing, so it will be interesting to see how it compares
