Hi there

What is the current Bluetooth specification and speeds?

I have got an old Bluetooth USB dongle (bought it 5 or so years ago), and noticed that it's considerably slower than a physical cable connection when transferring movie files from my wife's cellphone to computer. (Mecer USB dongle)

Is newer Bluetooth devices faster?

Or would you suggest that I use a physical cable connection for speed?

Regards

I have a new bluetooth dongle and it is still considerably slower than a cable.

The original bluetooth specification caters for speeds up to 721kbps (0,721mbps) if memory serves me correctly but this is hardly the case in real world scenarios.

A USB direct cabled conncection should always be faster. USB 1.1 transfers at up to 12mbit/s whereas USB 2.0 introduced speeds up to 480mbit/s.

Use the phone cable where humanly possible

I know it can be a small pain, but the speeds are really worth it. Compared to Bluetooth, my N80 flies over a cable. 50 odd megs of photo's and clips takes 2 minutes. Over Bluetooth, nearly 45 minutes.

The new Bluetooth specs are supposed to seriously bump up speed from what I understand.
But when those protocols will be implemented and supported by phones and dongles, I don't know.

Seems to be the case - will use bluetooth when it's small files, and cable for larger files.

Thanks!

So, in general, it is recommended to use cable when you use your cell as modem to avoid any bottlenecks.
