i'm sure many people have had this kinda problem so i'm expecting a plethora of suggestions *g*

i spent some time finding the sweet signal spot and found it +- 10 metres (as the crow flies) from the PC room. there's barely ANY signal in the PC room, yet the sweet spot yields a full 5 bars of signal (it's upstairs :) ).

anyone ever used bluetooth technology to get around this?

I have never used Bluetooth in conjunction with Iburst, so I have no idea how that would work.

But to get around this I would say buy a router ( wireless if you cant run cable) and simple connect your Iburst to this and then to your PC. Routers are cheap and provide a basic firewall as well as automic connection and a few other features.

But this is still costing you a bit of money and I'm shure some bright spark could give you a solution.

You could also just bypass the router and buy really long ethernet cable, up to 100m, so it shouldnt be a problem. But there might be no place for cable and you dont feel like drilling through your roof. So wireless might be the only option.

yeah wireless would be best. i'm looking for the cheapest solution obviously. also, i'm gonna get the UTU modem (no ethernet port?)...

Hi kaeiou

I'm also getting a wireless router soon because I don't want any cables lying around. The router I'm going for is a D-Link DI-624 and I'm going to use it with my UTD which has an Ethernet port. The UTU does not have an Ethernet port AFAIK

Thats a problem... pretty big one. It means you cant use a router for wireless and you cant use a really long network cable either.

Maby you should just get a UTD, its not htat much more expensive anymore and has better signal apparently. It also looks pretty damn cool, well the new ones. You can impress the hell out of everyone with that I'd say.

The netgear wireless routers are also pretty good, strong signal etc. Mine only cost me R600, the WRG614. But apparently a Netsys is the best. They all work well in any case and none should really give you problems.

cheapest wireless solution i mean. yeah now that i know the sweet spot is not the PC room i'm probably gonna get UTD. R600 is cool i guess.

and how much for a reciever? never seen wireless network before...
hope it's a neat little box with an antenna that plugs into USB.

Unless you have several PC's wanting to share the connection, forget about a wireless router. All you need is a 10m ethernet cable costing no more than R30-R40 running from your PC to the UTD located in its sweet spot.

If you didn't want the cable, you would have to buy BOTH a wireless router AND a wireless card for your PC. Doesn't seem worth it at all. But if you are looking to build a wireless network in your home, that's a different matter.

Rather just go for a ethernet cable is you only have one PC, like Gatecrasher said.

A receiver is just a PCI or USB card, but also costs about R250-300.

But the whole setup is going to cost you an extra R1000+, rather go for a network cable that costs R10 or so. Okay it will be more like R50, but worth it non the less. Oly problem is that you will probably have to start drilling...
