Is there a 4s bms for lead acid batteries? Can one even use a BMS ON Lead acid batteries?

Yes you can, that's basically what an intelligent charger is. What you need is a BMS that's programmed with lead acid specs.Good Inverters are also management systems in a way because they have most of the functions to keep batteries in good health.

Newer cars nowadays also have built BMSes for their lead acid batteries.

No idea on 4s or the type of BMS you want.
 
I have 4 x 12v lead batteries in series linked to a Solar array & 48v inverter, I want to manage the batteries better than I have in the past.

Nope. These are for balancing batteries in parallel (or 2 batteries in series). Multiple batteries connected in series make up a single battery. Just like the 6 x 2v cells inside of a battery make a 12v battery.

Two 12v batteries connected in series =a 24v battery
Four 12v batteries connect in series = a 48v battery

Two 12v batteries connected in series
Connected in parallel to
Two 12v batteries connected in series
= 2 x 24v batteries.
