The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer has made its first public appearance in production form at Geneva. The eagerly-anticipated new model will be BMW’s first ever MPV and also its first model with front-wheel drive, while the engines are shared with the new MINI.

Visually the new 2 Series Active Tourer is similar to the Ford B-MAX, with sweptback headlights and an angular rear. It is based on the new MINI and is marginally longer than the BMW 1 Series. However, despite its compact dimensions, the Active Tourer has 468 to 1510 litres of boot storage, with a flat loading floor. You will also be able to split the rear seats to carry large objects up to two meters in length.

The new 2 Series will have five seats at launch, but will be expanded to seven seats in 2015. The sliding rear seats will be fully adjustable and access to the boot is aided by a wide-opening tailgate, which also features push button automatic opening and closing. The engine line up will initially consist of three turbocharged engines, which all come from the new MINI - a 1.5-litre and 2.0-litre petrol and a 2.0-litre diesel.

The 218i is powered by the turbocharge three-cylinder engine petrol unit, with 136PS and 115g/km of CO2. Economy will be a claimed 57.6mpg and torque will peak at 220Nm. The top of the range 225i xDrive gets the 2.0-litre petrol with 170PS and four-wheel drive.

The 218d Active Tourer gets a turbocharged common rail diesel, with 150PS and a peak torque of 330Nm. CO2 will be 109g/km while economy will be a claimed 68.9mpg. In November 2014 BMW will introduce 220i, 216d, 220d and 220d xDrive. BMW has developed a new six-speed manual gearbox for the Active Tourer, although an automatic will also be available as an. All get start-stop technology as standard.

In addition to the entry level SE trim, Sport, Luxury and M Sport models will also be offered, although the latter will not be available until 2015. M Sport trim includes an aerodynamics package, M Sport suspension and 18-inch M light-alloy wheels and sports seats. Prices will start from £23,000, with deliveries starting from September 2014.

It's the new segment the Germans have ventured into.
They trying to move soccer moms out of SUVs.

VW golf also has one. Merc has the b class.
The Renault scenic and honda FRV own this segment.
It's a huge market in Europe and us.

The newest B-class Merc is relatively good looking. The prototype of the BMW looked better than the Merc. The production version unfortunately lost its good looks.

The FRV was discontinued years ago.

I am going to put my head on a block here and say hat this 2 series active tourer looks very nice, and I'd gladly spend my money on it. Yes, some of y'all might think it's ugly, but that's you. I like it lots...
