I have a 1997 BMW E36 316i with ignition problems. An indie mechanic told me my transmitter receiver relay was faulty and needed to buy a new one and when I took a sample to the dealer I was told to replace the whole ignition unit at a cost of around R5500. I want to find out if its possible to harvest the relay from another car and use it on my car (possibly along with the donor car's keys and ECU if necessary. Thanks in advance.

Where are you?

Pity. Just used a decent shop to fix my indicators last week. No junkyards there? Try a second hand part. Although that's not just a quick check I suspect.

Let me ask around. I just wanted to check first before buying the a unit which might not work on my car

Surely auto-electricians in your area will have a generic replacement relay or they could repair the old one.

Got another pic of the rear connectors? Also what is that on the right hand side, a mount?

I don't have the relay with me to post the back pic but it has no mount

From the pic, you've got EWS. From the little that I know it will need to be paired with both ECU and your key.

You can find used one from ebay. Did the mechanic test if the key is out of sync with EWS? The dealers are able to do that for you or check bmwfanatics see if there is some1 in your area.
