My car (BMW 316i E36)just developed a problem and and I know next to nothing about engines so I need some idea so I know what I'm facing (and budgeting for). The car no longer engages gears when the engine is running. When the engine is off I can engage all the gears but once I start the car it can't engage any gear. I have so far been told it might be that there is a leak on the hydraulic system of the clutch. Any second opinion on the solution (and possible cost) will be appreciated.

I don't know all that much about car but def sounds clutch related to me.

Also as far as I know those clutches can only be done by the agent due to something with the tension.

As D3x! Says, clutch it is. I know the father in law had it done a while back at a reliable mechanic and not through the agents (aka BMW). I am unsure as to costs through.

Yeah, that sounds like a problem with your clutch slave cylinder (uses brake fluid).

Google be your friend.

Most likely your clutch cable that needs to be replaced.

maybe its time to replace the brake fluid in the system as it get old,and bleed it again.but first of all check if you even have brake fluid left could be a bubble in the system

How long do guys keep parts for cars?

You might not need a new clutch, could be a failure somewhere in the hydraulic system for all we know.
