BMW 320d Q&A

I have six BMW one of them is 320D that i drive.the Car driving very good and have loots of power.
for the run flat tyres i make insurence at BMW that cost about R1300.00 for a car.
i buy a new car every three years and this is my 3 320D.

Oi Grimspoon pm whatever good deals you come across for the 320d, i'm also in jhb north and looking for a 2nd hand one too :D although i wouldn't mind getting a later model ie 09 or 2010

i've had the tyre warning light go off many many times ... and all i had to do was check tyre pressure and reset the warning
and that sorted out everything, mind you ... its not that easy if there is a tyre with a puncture ;)

lol maybe :p

This 320d I drove didn't have the sports pack, so there was definitely something wrong with the tyres, not to mention there was a run flat warning on the screen

Its a great car, but there are only 2 things that are putting me off, A the tyres are just stupid expensive and B after the motorplan the turbo alone will cost R35 - R40k to replace. Eina!
If one of the front tires are flat then you will have a bit more stiffness ... But yes BMW 3series does have stiffer steering compared to other cars, but i prefer my 320i like that because i gives you more grab on the corners and the response is awesome which also makes the car feels more sportier than others. 320d will definitely be better than 320i on consumption and the power is a killer, almost as if you driving a different size engine. The run flats are standard but you can add a spare wheel at a cost of +-R3000 i think. All they do they insert the spare wheel carrier/structure in your boot and remove the current structure. Am not sure if this applies to the face lift

You have had no turbo problems on the diesel ones yet?

1 thing I noted though was that the steering is pretty stiff. Apparently all BM's are like this. Used to my tdi light steering.

Another thing the guy told me is that all BM's come with run flats. Thought it was optional? R2000 a tyre scares me.

They all are come with Runflats but you can change them to normal tires. If you change to normal tires, make sure you use "Star" rated tires as recommended by BMW and get a sparesaver kit for +1 R3000. As for motorplan, I have replaced runflats to normal tires on my 2 BMW and never had issues.

Hi All.

Contrast is always an issue when you are used to one thing and getting into another car.

But to judge a BMW by using a Polo as comparison is not a good idea.

I could be wrong but I think that after other issues are resolved like wheel-alignment and tyre size and tipe, if the Power Steering is still too strenuous for your liking after you have allowed for a few hours of driving to get used to the new set-up, you can ask a mechanic to adjust it for you to make it a bit lighter.

As far as Run-Flats go, I feel that they are a bit of a nuisance as they do not have the same drive-quality experience as normal tyres, I believe fitted with these it is a less comfortable car to drive.

Personally I would fit normal tyres and put a spare in the boot. (Hire a Trailer if you need more space)

Nice car allround but if not on motorplan hold your head and cry if one of the injectors give up.

Jumping onto this thread - I'm currently looking at the 320d new.
Dealership has offered me 40k discount and guaranteed buy back after 36months (which suits me getting a new car every 3 yrs)
Is this a good deal? repyments would be about R5800.
I'm not concerned about not owning a car, and 'renting' as per this deal, is fine for me.

A new BMW 320d will be a joy, go for it if you can afford it. Issues only arise when its out of motor plan which you will not see :D

I am hearing a lot about this guaranteed buy backs lately but don't know much about it.

What happens if you prang the car? Will BMW still want a car that has been to the panel beaters? Are there mileage constraints?
I would not like to buy it after the 36m though as most who bought them probably didn't look after it as a person who was planning on keeping the car for 5+ years.

What's the offered interest rate (is it prime minus) and did they put residual on the deal? How does the discount work ...

Interest rate is 7.18 linked, and the residual is included (covered by the guaranteed buyback).
Discount is applied to the car before financing

Its a awesome plenty of power and its a diesel, be sure it has a maintence plan just to be safe

I'm a little late to the topic but I bought myself a 2007 320d just over 2 months ago and I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

I have the exclusive pack which I think is the best and far outweighs the benefits of a sport pack imo. City driving I can comfortably do over 700Kms on a tank. Haven't done a full on road trip yet but whenever I hit the highway the consumption drops significantly and my range just keeps growing :D

I don't think you'll be disappointed with it, even having driven much more expensive cars for a while I love everything about my 320D.

The steering wheel feels a bit stiffer than most sedans. But I particularly love feedback I get from it when on the open road. As for the tyres, I think they're noisier but oh I love them. If you get a warning, all you do is check tyre pressures and continue merrily with your driving. I've had punctures on 2 different occasions. Convinient to fit them.

That is one of the things that put me off the 3 series. Feels like you driving a truck. That and the price of the run flats.

Well, I went ahead and bought a 320d new, and although it's only been 2 weeks I have to say I think the car is fantastic.
Coming from a Ford Focus 1.6, the power is astonishing, but even more than that the ride quality is superb.
Loving it so far.
