Luckily my turbo hasn't blown yet. It makes a whirling sound (which I think sounds cool, despite that fact that I know it's a sign of bad things to come). I'm having it rebuilt (at a cost of around R6000) within the next few months.
I'm torn between keeping the car knowing that I have already replaced half the engine and should be good to go for a while or selling it based on my past experience.
Diesel engines with common rail injection run at pressures of around 1800 Bar afaik. Not many mechanics are able to fix your engine if something goes badly wrong.
Petrol engines also break, but you'll probably find it a lot cheaper to fix a blown head gasket than a similar diesel incident.
As long as your still on motorplan though, diesels should be fine.
