BMW 5 Series - reliability?

I'm shopping for a new car and keen on a 2006 + model 525. I like the larger sedan, especially when it has a solid amount of performance. Does anyone have an informed opinion on this that they would like to share?

Here is what i would do

- Take note of the VIN number, registration

- Go to any BMW dealer, ask for a print out of service history while she was on motorplan

- That way, you will get an idea what kind of maintenance history the car had, was it normal scheduled service or was it mechanical issues which are likely to haunt you in future?

- Also, you will get any motorplan comments like car accidents

I had a 325i and my friend drove a 525i Auto. Difference between the two cars is chalk and cheese. The 525i is solid built, comfortable and quiet on the road.

What is the Fuel consumption on the 525i AND the 530i mainly driving highway.

2005-2007 E60 525i - 160kW N52 Engine, not bad but it might be a bit of a fuel guzzler with that 2.5L straight 6. If money isnt an issue no problem.

Also the problem with most BMW's is that blimming Valvetronic, a bit expensive if it has to be replaced, servicing isnt cheap either but if you dont mind using After Market parts it will be cheaper.
Id rather a 530D...

Most recently a friend of a friend who runs a towing service who reckons that 90% of his flatbed call outs are BMWs that just stopped next to the road or wouldn't start in the driveway one day.
Pretty sure under some conditions they shut down to prevent further damage.

They definitely have a safe mode where the revs are capped & refuses to go faster than 75ish.

After 2 years notices the last untrolled thread standing and replies :D
