I've got an e46 318 and it cuts out when the engines warmed up. Doesnt happen every time, just randomly. I've been told that its a common problem with e46's and its probably either the camshaft or crankshaft sensors (the latter being the more probable cause) Has anyone had the same problem and what was the cause?

I also had the same problem with my 2003 318i some time ago.
It was crankshaft sensor, cost me r1750 then,
Im 90% sure you need to replace the CS sensor, sensor is around r700, but labour gonna cost you more then a sensor.

Mechanic told me due to awkward position of sensor they have to strip few things thats why labour is high.

In the begnning its not gonna be bad but if you never replace the sensor car gonna take time to start from 30sec to 10min.

Peace: thanks alot 4 the info. Mine doesnt trouble when starting though. Its cuts out 4 like just a second while driving and then carries on like nothing happened. Its never caused me to get stuck or even stop. Spoke to a mech earlier today and he also said its a crapy job to do because of the location of the crank sensor.

thedutchman: wow u sure have balls to say u dutchman

rezabz, Did you replace the crankshaft sensor and did it sort your cutting out problem out. i have the same problem on my 318i, but i dont want to spend the money if if might not be the problem?

Ndupisani, it was the crank sensor. I had a new 1 fitted in January and have not experienced a cut out since. I searched e46fanatics too as Slootvreter suggested and it seems to be a rather commom problem.
