Is it possible to extend a motor-plan that has expired?
2007 BMW; 80k km in.

This is for a friend. Still rolling in my toyota :p

Call BMW, don't ask people on the internet who will probably give you incorrect information anyway.

Shouldn't be a problem, because it's still in its motorplan (assuming it was bought after August 2007), and it's after the changeover that they did with their insurers, but it's an expensive option.

I don't see any prices when I log into the BMW portal, because BMW wants us to call them, but the last quote I saw was pretty expensive - unless you've got an unplanned expensive service, it's not worthwhile.

Should he extend or fix it using a back-yard mechanic?
Benefits of the motor-plan?

The only monetary benefit of the motorplan is if you go for your next service and it racks up > R10k.

You can see the benefits here:

As to servicing... I still take the Merc to Mercedes, and it's 70'000km out of its motorplan. Hasn't really been that pricey.

It also depends on what BMW it is... turbo? Is it a cabriolet?
Anything that can break and is expensive to replace, warrants a motorplan... so it's that catch-22 situation.

As long as it is still under motorplan you have the option to extend to either 7years or 200 000kms whichever comes first

My experience with BMW has been pretty good.
I have owned a number of them right across the range.

If the car has been regularly maintained by BMW (only), even beyond warranty & motorplan, they are willing to carry the cost of a number of repairs.
The attitute is that if properly maintained by BMW agents, the servicing agent would be aware of any factory notices & be in a position to take preventative action.
I had a few major problems on 3 different cars over time - all were out of motorplan, all repairs covered by agents / factory.
1st, was one of the old cabriolets (323 cabriolet) the front seats had some bad factory design that made the backrest (of the front seats) go skew after a while, due to tilting back and forward.
2nd was a roof problem with a 328 convertible, roof was not locking down properly - massive cost absorbed by factory as auto atlantic failed to change some part that wore out.
3rd was a cam belt break on a 540i (major engine damage), service agents failed to replace as per factory notice - also huge cost absorbed by agent factory.

If the cars had been service elsewhere, BMW would not have entertained absorbing the cost.
if the cars had been serviced by a non BMW agent, there would have been a fair chance they would be unaware of all factory service circulars.

They've got several different ones available, starting from 120'000km, all the way up to 200, yes. But on the 200'000km you have to drive an insane number of kilos to make it worthwhile.

I take a little, tiny bit of exception to that. There are a few of us 'round here who will go out of our way to ensure the info we supply is accurate. Or, should I understand that one shouldn't really ask people on the internet anything at all? Would make MyBB an awfully boring place. :p

I know what you are saying, it just grates my nerves that people would rather go on the internet to get a possibly correct answer rather than go to the source and get a 100% correct answer.

Especially gets my goat up when people say "If I do this and this...will my bank do this and that...and how much will it cost". Phone your ****ing bank...you are paying them good money for the privilege after all.
