Hi

I recently noticed that the backlight for the headlight switch is always illuminated even when the headlight switch is in the OFF position when the car is switched on with the engine running. (see attached pic)

From what I can recall - previously the backlight for the headlight switch would only light up when the headlight switch is turned on for the park lights or headlights.

Please could any BMW F20 or F30 series drivers check if your car exhibits the same behaviour - in other words does the backlight of the headlight switch remain illuminated all the time when the car is switched on even if the headlight dial is in the off position ?

Could it be a software glitch and the car's computer that needs to be reset / recoded ?

Thank you

Does your BMW exhibit the same behaviour (i.e. does the backlight of the headlight switch remain illuminated all the time when the engine is switched on even if the headlight dial is in the OFF position even during the daytime ? )

That's called ambient lighting and it's always on. If you want to turn it down use the adjuster wheel on the far right of your picture, all the ambient lighting including your dash will dim.

If the headlight control dial is set to the OFF position the adjuster wheel on the far right does not brighten nor dim the ambient lighting; it becomes active when the headlight control dial is set to position 1 (park lights on) or position 2 (headlights on).

My car is set to always have lights on, so I don't know if it has the same behavior.
Would you mind checking/testing by placing the headlight control dial to the OFF position with car the engine on / running please ?

I am really intrigued as to what the issue is. Is the back light on when the car is completely switched off? If that is the case then check it. Why does it bother you if its illuminated when the car is on?

No the backlight is off when the car is completely switched off.

It just an irritant that it is illuminated/on during the day time while driving.
None of my other cars exhibit this behaviour.
