Official: BMW has bought Alpina

Over 50 years of collaboration results in BMW securing the rights to the Alpina brand

The BMW Group has announced it has acquired the rights to Alpina. Which means one of the coolest tuners on Planet Earth will officially become part of BMW.

Of course, Alpina and BMW have worked closely together for over half a century, and Alpina models are currently pre-assembled on BMW production lines before being sent to the tuner's Buchloe workshops for engine, chassis and interior modifications.

This process will continue until 31 December 2025 (both BMW and Alpina extended their cooperation agreement late in 2020). After 2025 however, the current Alpina line-up will be discontinued and a new strategy mapped out hand-in-hand with the BMW mothership.

“We recognised the challenges facing the automotive industry early on and are now setting the right course for Alpina and for our family firm,” explains Alpina co-director Andreas Bovensiepen. “This marks the beginning of a new chapter. Both the Alpina brand and our company are extremely desirable.

“We made a conscious decision not to sell Alpina to just any manufacturer, because BMW and Alpina have worked together and trusted one another for decades. That is why it is the right decision strategically for the Alpina brand to be managed by the BMW Group in the future,” he added.

BMW Has Officially Acquired Alpina

They will not be disclosing any financial details about the deal.

Long-time BMW tuner Alpina has been acquired by the BMW Group but will not be disclosing any financial details about the deal.

As part of the deal, the tuner will continue building their modified BMW products until the end of 2025. After this, it is not exactly known what will happen to Alpina but their facility in Buchloe will stop producing vehicles.

BMW will offer the people who will lose their jobs a position within the automaker, suppliers, or development partners.

Current and legacy Alpina products will still be able to access service facilities, parts and accessories from the Buchloe facility.

In BMW’s announcement of the acquisition, it notes that increasing regulation of emissions and driver safety systems make operating a small-production company like Alpina increasingly difficult. This merger lets the brand remain on the market.

BMW Group Officially Acquires the Alpina Brand

The rights to the Alpina brand have been secured by the BMW Group, though exactly how the name will be used – and particularly how it will be positioned with regards to the M division – remains unclear…

The BMW Group has announced that it has acquired the rights to the Alpina brand in an attempt to “secure the future” of the small-series manufacturer as the industry continues its rapid shift towards electromobility.

While the particulars of the deal – which we should point out is subject to various suspensive conditions – remain under wraps with both parties agreeing not to disclose any financial details, we do know the existing long-standing co-operation agreement will run until the end of 2025, with Alpina likely to retain its focus on combustion-engined BMW models until then. Thereafter, BMW rather cryptically says the co-operation will continue “but in a different form”.

The German giant says the acquisition of the 57-year-old Buchloe-based firm will bring “even greater diversity to its own luxury-car range”, though points out the transfer of trademark rights and the resulting discontinuation of the current Alpina vehicle programme at the end of 2025 will “have implications for existing jobs” at the Buchloe facility.

Still, BMW says it plans to support Alpina with the “necessary adjustments to the workforce” over the coming years, before offering any employees not able to continue working at the Buchloe site at the end of 2025 a new position with the BMW Group, suppliers or development partners.

“The automotive industry is in the midst of a far-reaching transformation towards sustainable mobility. For that reason, existing business models need to be re-examined on a regular basis,” said Pieter Nota, member of the BMW Board of Management responsible for Customer, Brands and Sales.

BMW merges with famed German high-end tuner Alpina

Famed Bavarian automaker BMW has officially announced that it will merge with the Buchloe-based tuning company Alpina. The contract between BMW and tuner Alpina has now been extended till the 25th of December 2025.

After the specified date the factory located in Buchloe will be closed. Workers currently employed at the factory will be assisted by BMW to find placements in their ranks or with suppliers and development partners. Both parties involved have refrained from disclosing the figure involved in the transaction.

The deal has not yet been fully approved as a result of Antitrust authorities having to clear the deal. According to the co-managing director of Alpina, Andreas Bovensiepen, the merger and sale of tuner Alpina to BMW was a strategic decision to ensure the longevity and continued success of the company in the face of electromobility which has put huge strain on small businesses such as Alpina. BMW benefits from having its cars specially modified by the Alpina team. Currently, BMW Alpina cars are partially built in the Buchloe Alpina factory and then sent for completion in the BMW factory. There has also been mention of an initiative by Alpina to restore older Alpina cars, along with a push for greater availability of parts for the cars.

BMW buys Alpina to bring ‘greater diversity’ to its own brand

The name Alpina should be well known to most car enthusiasts. This German manufacturer, yes Alpina is a registered automaker, has been working its magic on BMW-based products for almost 60 years. The news just broke that BMW buys Alpina, in a interesting turnaround for both brands.

The BMW Group will buy Alpina in its entirety and secure the rights to the brand. BMW says that doing so will bring even greater diversity to its own luxury-car range. The conclusion of the transaction is still subject to various conditions. Alpina, a small-series manufacturer from Buchloe, outside of Munich, has forged a close cooperation with the auto giant.

Alpina will continue to use its engineering expertise in developing, manufacturing, and selling BMW Alpina vehicles until the end of 2025. BMW Alpina vehicles are pre-assembled on BMW production lines before final assembly taking place in workshops in Buchloe.

New 2022 Alpina B4 previewed ahead of tomorrow's full reveal

Alpina teased the model with an image showing its front headlights, side skirts and Pirelli tyres

The Alpina B4 Gran Coupe will be revealed tomorrow, and the firm has previewed the model with an image on its social media pages.

Alpina did not reveal any further details to Autocar, but the image shows the model’s front headlights, side skirts and Pirelli tyres.

While the previous car was based on the two-door 4 Series Coupé, its successor will take the new BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé as its basis. Spy shots released last year showed an obviously uprated 4 Series Gran Coupé being tested on public roads, lending credence to earlier claims that Buchloe's next unveiling will be a four-door proposition, rather than based on the two-door 4 Series coupé.

The tip came from an unidentified source on the popular Bimmerpost forum who claimed to have access to future product plans "compiled from various leaks within the BMW organization".

According to the dates outlined, the new Alpina B4 will be introduced in March 2022, as BMW ushers in a new four-wheel-drive 430ix variant of the G26-generation 4 Series Gran Coupé. It remains possible that a two-door version could follow shortly after.

rip alpina ...... BMW will devalue the alpina brand , and slap the badge on anything and everything just like AMG.
That is exactly what I am worried about. I have loved the way Alpina went about its cars.

Only if they (BMW) were offered 49 percent of the business and then let Alpina continue the way they did.

New Alpina B4 gets four doors, outpaces BMW M4 Competition

Renowned tuning firm's new B4 Gran Coupé brings 488bhp and a whopping 568lb ft of torque

Alpina has filled the gap between the BMW 4 Series and BMW M4 Competition with the second-generation B4, which gains a pair of rear doors for the first time.

Based on the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupé, the new Alpina B4 Gran Coupé arrives just weeks after the Buchloe-based tuning brand was acquired by BMW and is thus officially named the BMW Alpina B4.

It's expected to be the final addition to the marque's current-generation line-up of modified BMW models.

As with the firm's take on the BMW 3 Series, the Alpina B3, the new B4 uses a tuned version of the 'S58' twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre straight-six petrol engine, sending 488bhp and 538lb ft through an eight-speed automatic gearbox to both axles – only slightly less power and 59lb ft more torque than the 503bhp M4 Competition.

Despite the power deficit and weighing 240kg more than the two-door M4 Competition, the B4 is actually 0.1sec quicker than the more hardcore car from 0-62mph, needing just 3.7sec for the sprint, and it just pips it for top speed, too, topping out at 187mph.
