I think that would be an error by the author but either way I don't think we'll see many of these on the roads.

Option 1:
Small electric BMW i3 hatchback for R525 000

Option 2:
Hyundai i20 1.4 CRDI for R216 000 with 468 000km worth of fuel (5.5L/100km and diesel price of R12/L).

So essentially you can drive 25,000 km per annum in the i20 for just over 18 years before you break even with an i3 standing in the garage for 18 years.
You have to pay for charging the i3 from day one.

I doubt there would ever be a break even point once you factor in vehicle lifespan, battery lifespan, limited service plans and expensive parts from BMW.

Show me a locally available EV for R200,000 and then we'll be making progress.

Nope. Range extender is an extra petrol motor connected to a charger, for emergencies.

I think you missed the point of Rusty0.

The electric BMW i3 costs R525 000, and the range extender costs R595 000.

That means the i3 with range extender costs R1,12 million?
Badly worded sentence.

So does a petrol generator fit into the boot for when Eskom has an off day?

Not too bothered with cars but would love to see what they eventually do with Scooters and such.

Now that would make some sense to me as an electric option.
