BMW M8 Ready To Take On Porsche Turbo

In a recent teleconference with Australian media, the president of BMW’s M Division, Markus Flasch revealed that the BMW M8 will be more than just a coupe version of the M5.

When asked about a potential hypercar from BMW, Flasch admitted that the company’s performance division had been pushing for such a model over a number of years but there is “no concrete plan, nothing that I can confirm…”

Other details from the conversation included the following;

- M8 centre of gravity is 24mm lower than the M5
- Stiffer front end and different steering feel to the M5
- Four-wheel steering not happening for M8
- The BMW M8 will be the fastest BMW M car on the
Nurburgring Nordschleife
- Global debut later this year

The new BMW M8 Coupe and new BMW M8 Competition Coupe, plus the new BMW M8 Convertible and new BMW M8 Competition Convertible.

The new models draw the energy for their exceptional performance exploits from the most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M GmbH car. The high-revving V8 unit with M TwinPower Turbo technology develops 441 kW/600 hp in the new BMW M8 Coupe and new BMW M8 Convertible, and 460 kW/625 hp in the Competition models. The high-performance power unit teams up with an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic, and the engine's power is channelled to the road via the M xDrive all-wheel-drive system.

The model-specific chassis technology has been designed and tuned with the specific demands of track use in mind. One of the features of the chassis that stands out in particular is a newly developed integrated braking system, an M-specific version of which presents the driver with two different brake pedal feel settings.

The precise interaction between powertrain, chassis technology and aerodynamics has been carefully honed over the course of intensive testing at the BMW Group's test track in Miramas in southern France, the winter testing centre in Arjeplog, Sweden and the Nürburgring's Nordschleife circuit, along with other race circuits. Experience collected from the development of the BMW M8 GTE racing car also played a role in the configuration process. The performance-focused character of the engine, transmission and chassis allows the new BMW M8 Coupe and new BMW M8 Convertible to power from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.3 / 3.4 seconds. The new BMW M8 Competition Coupe sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, the new BMW M8 Competition Convertible in 3.3 seconds.

New BMW M8 Competition (coupé and convertible) revealed!

BMW has whipped the covers off its new M8, set to be offered in standard form and flagship Competition guise as well as in both coupé and convertible body styles. All four variants are scheduled to hit South Africa in the fourth quarter of 2019.

Oomph comes from the “most powerful engine ever developed for a BMW M car”, with the twin-turbo 4,4-litre V8 developing 441 kW in the case of the standard (for lack of a better term) models and 460 kW in the Competition variants (and 750 N.m in both cases).

An eight-speed M Steptronic transmission ships standard, directing drive to all four wheels via the Munich-based firm’s rear-biased M xDrive system (complete with the same sort of “2WD” mode that debuted on the M5).

The M8 Coupé will thus hit 100 km/h in a claimed 3,3 seconds (with the soft-top taking one-tenth longer), while the M8 Competition Coupé will complete the sprint to three figures in a claimed 3,2 seconds (with the cabriolet again one-tenth behind). Top speed for all models is electronically limited to 250 km/h, although can be optionally raised to 305 km/h.

BMW M8 Revealed in 4 Flavours

The new and highly-anticipated M8 has been revealed with 4 variants on offer and is expected to arrive in South Africa in Q4 of 2019.

Here it is, the new BMW M8! It will be offered in 4 tantalising flavours including the M8 Coupe, Competition Coupe, Convertible and Competition Convertible.

A twin-turbo 4.4-litre V8 engine powers the M8 and in standard Coupe and Convertible form, total outputs of 441 kW and 750 Nm of torque. If that’s not enough, the Competition derivatives serve up 460 kW and 750 Nm of torque. An 8-speed M Steptronic transmission with Drivelogic is standard and the driver can switch between 3 modes to achieve either efficiency, sporty or dynamic driving while also using the steering-mounted shift paddles to blitz through the shifts.

Equipped with a rear-biased x-Drive all-wheel-drive system and an Active M Differential, acceleration is scintillating and the M8 Coupe and Convertible achieving zero to 100 kph in 3.3 and 3.4 seconds respectively. The M8 Competition Coupe and Convertible are slightly faster with claimed figures of 3.2 and 3.3 seconds respectively.

New BMW M8 already lathered in tasty M Performance parts

Although the new BMW M8 has only just been revealed, the Munich-based firm has already detailed the catalogue of M Performance parts set to be available for both the standard coupé and convertible derivatives as well as the flagship 460 kW Competition variants.

In addition to the optional Carbon Package, various M Performance carbon-fibre exterior components will be offered, including special side-sill attachments, a grille and an engine cover finished in the lightweight material. These parts each feature an exposed carbon-fibre finish "crafted by hand" and sealed with a clear finish with a high-gloss polish.

The range also includes M Performance sport brake pads that BMW claims allows “more dynamic, racing-style steering” when braking into a bend. Then there’s the M Performance Pro steering wheel, complete with carbon-fibre shift paddles and a mix of carbon-fibre, Alcantara and leather trim.

BMW M8 Gets M Performance Parts Treatment

The BMW M8 has only just been revealed and already M Performance is keen to show off cosmetic and aerodynamic upgrades for the model.

We've grown accustomed to BMW announcing an M Performance parts catalogue almost immediately after a new model release and the recent unveiling of the M8 is no different. What you see here is the M Performance parts applied to the new BMW M8 coupe. BMW claims the parts are inspired by the BMW M8 GTE racecar and gives customers a chance to customise their cars. The parts are not only cosmetic and some are said to improve aerodynamics and save weight. All parts are available for both the coupe and the convertible.

There's liberal use of carbon fibre detailing which goes beyond what BMW already offers with the optional Carbon Package. There's carbon fibre detailing for the radiator grille. side skirts, engine cover as well as uprated brakes.

Inside, you can opt for the BMW M Performance steering wheel which features carbon fibre shift paddles as well as Alcantara/carbon fibre trim. There are also BMW M Performance floor mats and for those wanting to protect their cars from dirt, there's a BMW M Performance car cover.

BMW M8 Set To Be The Fastest Production BMW Ever Around The Nurburgring

There is no doubt that the new BMW M8 and M8 Competition was one of the most anticipated cars to break cover this year. With more than 600 horsepower (447 kW) on tap, it is certainly no slouch when you give it a little poke with a stick. It is so powerful, in fact, that BMW seems to claim that it is the fastest BMW to ever have lapped the Nürburgring.

Head of BMW’s M division, Markus Flasch, reportedly told Which Car that the new M8 has beaten the M4 GTS’ time of 7:27.88. “[The M8] is the ultimate performance machine that we offer; it will be the fastest ever BMW at the Nürburgring Nordschleife.”

BMW M8 Gran Coupé (plus ‘Carbon Edition’ variant) rendered

Now that BMW has officially unwrapped its 8 Series Gran Coupé, a digital artist from Russia has rendered the inevitable M-badged flagship.

Interestingly, artist Aksyonov Nikita has dreamt up two versions of the upcoming M8 Gran Coupe: one in standard form and the second in “Carbon Edition” trim, complete with a handful of added M Performance bits and pieces.

Nikita effectively fused together elements of the existing M8 coupé and the recently revealed 8 Series Gran Coupé to create the realistic renderings.
