Hi, I have a 2012 BMW X1 with 75 000 kms, the motorplan is expiring next year. BMW has quoted R13 500 to extend for one year. Just looking for advise if this is a good idea? Or maybe shop it around to Motorite or SA Warranties? thanks

Either extend with BMW or don't have any "warranty" at all. Aftermarket warranties are totally worthless imo.

I extended my last BMW's motor plan to see me through the last year of ownership, in retrospect I could have gotten away cheaper as there was only one minor service in the last year. Your choice really, do you want peace of mind or do you want the best financial outcome?

Your next scheduled service is going to be say R3,500 at a BMW dealer. You are therefore looking at roughly R10,000 as an insurance premium for a full of fine print insurance policy against mechanical failure. Yes, it is true that the fine print is typically less than a 3rd party insurer, but at the end of the day it is risk decision.

Do you think something that will be covered (Read the fine print) will break in the next 12 months and what is the probability?
IF YES, what do you think the cost will be?
IF more than R10,000 (taking into account the probabilities) then yes, take out the insurance
IF NO nothing is expected to break, or Yes it will but it will be less than R10,000, then do not take out the insurance.

Unfortunately, no one on this forum nor any machine can do this assessment on your behalf as you are the one that knows the history of the vehicle and how well you maintained and treated it.

Put it like this, in countries like the UK, all maintenance contracts are separate transactions, even the initial one. Because most of the big ticket items are covered by your warranties. So in SA we pay a hell of a lot to have your wiper blades and fuel filters replaced for "free" later on

My Audi is R52,000 for extra 2 yr / 20,000km. Daylight robbery.

Attempted to buy a Volvo and the service was beyond shocking. You have to beg and plead with them to get service.

So, sticking with the Audi brand and trading in for a smaller, newer model

#offtopic but out if curiousity which dealer did you try get a Volvo from? And which model were you looking at?

Volvo Westrand

Tried to get a white V40 T5 R Design.

I posted the buying attempt on here last week, they saw it and phoned to apologise - but by that stage I had given up.

Oh ok. Sorry to hear that though. All the best with the Audi

This.

OP, what does your motorplan history look like?
When are which service items due, and what did they cost the last time they were done?

I extended my MP twice. First year I broke even. I think the waterpump broke and I had a service.
Second year I "won". I asked them to check things I suspected that could give issues, and they did about 40K of work.

Do the "common problems" google search and see if there's a good reason to extend.
I personally would extend time, as it's relatively cheap for peace of mind. Extending for time and kilometers is crazy expensive and not worth it imo.
