I need to renew my motorplan (99000km) on my 2011 320D however BMW want to charge me 40K to extend by 20000 km. What's the general feeling around BMW's out of motorplan, worth the risk it should I just extend?

The 2011 320D should be the latest/final revision of that particular engine and is probably one of the most reliable engines in the E90 range.

I wouldn't renew.

Renewing kms is always expensive. I wouldn't renew either. I'd rather put the 40k aside for the next 2 years just in case you need it.

I'm not renewing my plan for the same model. Currently on 67000km. Will just save a couple of thousands rands a month for when it's needed.
Make sure that you do all required work on it before the plan expires. I just had all my shocks done which would have cost me R15k.

You've to pressure them to change the shocks. I got a report from super quick and took it to them took them 3 days to authorize the work

Yes same thing with me. They did it after I phoned the workshop manager. I had a HiQ test which showed shocks at <30%.

How long have you had the vehicle? If from new, perhaps time to change, if only for a year or so then it seems it was that "nice car" we all bought at some point, but the maintenance now starts to be an issue... :)

Reality is it's probably worth far less than 100K on trade on anything else - so if you have some spare money around, then take the risk - but find out from the BM dealership what the expensive replacement parts could be - probably turbo, gearbox etc - and remember to include labor.

So if a turbo replacement is 20K+ 5K labor - then I'd extend - also depends if it's your daily drive, if you do high mileage etc... I think of it as being another R1666 per month over 24 months to drive the car another 2 years - If it's paid off, and you don't do high mileage - so the 2Y/20000km will last another 2 years - go for it. Any replacement car will cost a lot more than R1600 pm... If you are doing high mileage, it might not be the best idea...

edit: saw it's 40K for 20000km , not 40000km

I have the exact same car, and after doing extensive research on international and local (BMWfanatics) forums, I came to the conclusion that it’s not worth it.

Make sure you service the car as required: Oil, oil Filter, diesel filter, air filter, brakes etc
The E90 face-lift is generally a very reliable car, and if you haven't experienced any majour issues you should be fine. If you look after your car, your car will look after you.

If you have the Auto box:

Call ZF Services in Germiston (these are the guys that make the gearboxes for BMW, AUDI, VW etc), and schedule a gearbox service for 100 000km. Its essential preventative maintenance that you want to carry out, sooner than later. For some reason BMW calls the oil in the gearbox "lifetime oil", and it never gets replaced.

If you have the Manual box:

ZF will probably just do an oil change, not too sure about that tho. Call them and ask.

Your clutch will go eventually go, so put some cash aside for this.

General Issues:

Turbo’s are very reliable, with some E90 owners reporting more than 250 000km on the original turbo. Keep in mind tho, if you are going to drive your car like a maniac while its still cold, you will probably have turbo problems sooner than later.

Its quite common to install a downpipe, decat and do software after your motorplan expires. Not only will your turbo run cooler, but you will have quite a bit more power. Overall, it doesn’t seem to affect reliability, if you do it with a reputable company.

Any other questions / queries you might have, go check out the BMWfanatics forum. The 320d is a very popular car with members, and there are lots of info available.

i have one of the last e90 320Ds made.
2012 model.
same engine as current f30 320d.... why change it if it aint broke ya.

they pretty bullet proof from what i hear. just service on time and fix it as soon as you hear a small sound here and there- don't let it compound.
new turbo is R7k for a garret piece from turbo direct. labour Meh..
i dont see alot going wrong with them - I PRAY!
and yes there is the customary ZF tranny inspection/service at about 120 000km i hear..
I would not extend. i'm on 60 000kms..

You don't NEED to do anything.

Take half the quoted amount and put it in your emergency fund. Use that should anything break.

Stop using the dealership and start going to an independent specialist.

Or do what BMW really want you to do by quoting such a crazy price...trade it in on a new one.

Nice post. I'll remember this when I reach my 100,000km. How much power do all these modifications add and what would they cost?

look at getting a mechanical insurance, should cover you if anything mechanical breaks.
the monthly repayments are quite low as well.

How long is a piece of string?

Check out these well known companies, and chat to them about the services they offer, and decide from there:

http://www.promotec.co.za/

Im not too certain on pricing from the individual providers, I think its in the region of R7500-R10 000 for the software and downpipe.

In regards to power figures, some members have reported 40hp on the wheels, & over 70NM on the wheels gain.

Thanks for the detailed reply, mine is a Auto so will keep that in mind. Relocated to CPT so will have to find some reputable dealers this side.

I went to ZF in Germiston when I had my box serviced. Its amazing to think that all these manufacturers drop the cars off there to service/diagnose/fix the gearboxes (I saw the parking lot full of cars).

If I were you I would phone them, and have them recommend a CT dealer.
