Nuerburgring - F1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone's praise of Adolf Hitler was wrong and disgusting, BMW-Sauber team boss Mario Theissen said on Thursday.

In the first public condemnation from a senior figure within the paddock, Theissen told reporters that he expected the 78-year-old Briton to make a further apology when he arrived at the German Grand Prix circuit.

Ecclestone caused outrage when, in an interview with Britain's Times newspaper on Saturday, he commented on Hitler's ability to "get things done".

The comments prompted a German Jewish group to call for a boycott of F1 while the premier of the southern state of Baden-Wuerttemberg cancelled a scheduled meeting with Ecclestone at the Nuerburgring.

Ecclestone has since apologised repeatedly and unreservedly, saying he was "extremely distressed and embarrassed" that he might be thought to be supporting such people as the Nazi dictator.

"I would say obviously wrong, disgusting," Theissen, a German, said when asked for his opinion of what Ecclestone had told the newspaper.

"Apparently he was shocked himself when he was confronted with what he has said. He has made some comments meanwhile and as I have heard, he will make some more comments as soon as he is here and I think this is necessary."

The original Nuerburgring circuit, built in the 1920s, hosted 11 Grand Prixs before World War Two with Hitler a spectator on at least one occasion in an era when the state-backed Mercedes and Auto Union cars were dominant.

Mercedes, now partners with McLaren, are this weekend marking the 75th anniversary of Manfred von Brauchitsch's victory in their first 'Silver Arrows' car on the Nordschleife circuit.

In a marked contrast with those days, McLaren's Lewis Hamilton - the sport's first black world champion - drove the original Mercedes W25 car around a section of the old track on Thursday.

Why did you think I brought it up :D

I have actually driven some two stroke DKW's that have the Auto Union badge on them. My one friend collects VWs and Audi's - mostly old stuff

Aww, did we hurt your feelings? Does freedom of speech, especially when speaking of ole Hitler, no longer exist?

I agree. Hitler transformed a destroyed Germany into a world power and economic giant. He made Volkswagen!

Despite his crimes, he certainly could get things done. If more politicians today could "get things done" we'd be living in a great world.

And more importantly, the autobahn :) Some very good engineering in there.

Just another case of "any enemy of Israel and the West is a friend of ours"

Remember the response to the Mohammad cartoons - did you enjoy that freedom of expression, or was it in the wrong direction for you?

So what's the point of building an economic giant and world power and then destroying it? Not to mention destroying other nations :erm:

Yeah much the same as what the Nats did with Apartheid
Funny how you condemn that but because Hitler butchered millions of Jews, thats ok.

Didn't BMW support the Nazis during WW2 and er use slave labour as well, just as most other big German companies surviving from that time?

Marine, what exactly am I condmening with regards to apartheid?

Nearly all people overlook what Hitler achieved and they simply love to pass judgement on things with their media-delivered wealth of knowledge. That's somewhat dense and prejuidiced.

I'm not sure what you mean Hitler achieved. Hitler build the economy in an unsustainable way. Hitler had to start WW2 and grab the Polish territory to fuel his expansion. The German economy would have burned out in a few more years - any idiot can do that.

So besides the start of WW2 in Europe and the destruction of much of the world with the genocide which followed (NOT JUST OF JEWS), and the handing over of half of Europe to Soviet Russia afterwards, there was not much else Hitler achieved. I guess on a rating scale of killers, destroyers and baby rapists Hitler achieved a high score with Pol Pot and Stalin - but on the economy and military Hitler achieved zero.
Even his plans to attack Poland, France and Russia were formulated by
various generals who were of aristocratic stock - old Prussian military school.

Yeah on a scale of killers Hitler achieved a lot. If you want to respect that, you can - he was quite efficient in that. Then again it was all just ruthlessness - when the SS AND Wehrmacht shoot mothers with babies and then don't have issues with it afterwards you realise that Hitler was definately not alone and a large percentage of Germans were culpable. They got off lightly IMO - the Marshall Plan rebuilt Germany but had it not been for the Soviet Union's expansion - Germany would probably have been reduced to a 3rd world society and never allowed to rebuild itself. There would be no MB or BMWs around nowadays.

I guess you could say Al Capone was a great thinker too. These guys were all great at what they did - they got to the top - so yeah you could admire the tenacity and the rabble rousing or the business acumen of some of these infamous people - if Hitler was a nice guy instead of a psychopath - well things would have been different (although the whole Nazi party would have to be nice then.)

Well, they lost LeMans to Peugeot & the diesel R8 has been shelved... so that's going well.

Yes, but Le Mans was a second to Peugeot, in third place. As opposed to Hamilton's recent spate of 16th place.

And the fact that a diesel supercar is a distinct possibility, maybe once the world economy has righted itself, is exciting enough (designs may be pushed into other vehicles).

At least one manufacturer is still taking the risk and the lead.

I would tend to disagree. Where as I would never justify what Hitler did, if you compare mid-20s Germany with mid-30s Germany Hitler saved the country from economic collapse. This is why so many Germans were loyal to the Fuhrer because he "saved" Germany.

Had the Allies not learnt from Versailles and punished Germany more severely, especially economically, then all they would have achieved was a third generation of Germans hell bent on restoring Germany to its "rightful place" in Europe. The Marshall plan was effective, as previously it took the policies of a mad man to restore the country and saw Germany separated from the rest of the world believing they were the only ones who could save themselves. The Marshall plan turned this around and made Germany a friend to the West.

Effectively the Marshall plan replaced what Hitler did in the 1930s with something less aggressive in the 1950s, achieving the same result. By sparing the stick and dangling a carrot the Allies, especially the West, saved the world from what could have become another World War.
