BMW Introduces New X3 M and X4 M At Nürburgring DTM Weekend

In a surprise move, BMW displayed its new X3 M and X4 M performance “Sport Activity Vehicles” for the first time in the lead up to today’s Nürburgring DTM race. The two lightly-camouflaged prototypes were test driven on the track to show off their new aerodynamic, suspension, and drivetrain tweaks. BMW claims the engine is an all-new inline-six cylinder with “M TwinPower Turbo technology” and high-revving characteristics.

“With their M specific performance characteristics, the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M will set benchmarks in terms of dynamics in their respective vehicle segment,” says Frank van Meel, President BMW M GmbH.

BMW is also touting the M xDrive all-wheel drive technology, which was introduced in the M5 earlier this year. This system promises a performance-oriented transfer of engine power to all four of the vehicle’s wheels. Each wheel can be independently controlled for power distribution to allow a balance between maximum traction and dynamic handling.

The performance mid-sized SUV market is becoming quite large, and both of these HiPo Bimmers will face competition from other Germans, like the Porsche Macan and Mercedes GLC AMG models. No mention has been made yet of power output levels, or price points. The M4's inline-six turbo engine has been tuned to make nearly 500 horsepower in the GTS model, which would be more than enough to best those other Germans.

The X4 M40i currently retails at $60,450, and this proper M-division version of the X4 is likely to carry a serious premium on top of that.

New BMW X3 M and X4 M: here’s your first official glimpse

BMW has released a handful of images showing its new X3 M and X4 M prototypes in action, as it finally officially confirms the expansion of its high-performance range.

Set to slot in below the X5 M and X6 M, the two new M-badged crossovers will take on the V8-powered Mercedes-AMG GLC63 and GLC63 Coupé.

The camouflaged pre-series vehicles boast large air intakes up front plus what the Bavarian automaker describes as “specific M features for optimised aerodynamics”. An exhaust system with four tailpipes integrated into the rear apron is also included.

So, what’s under the bonnet? Well, BMW says the new X3 M and X4 M will each be powered by a “newly developed” straight six-cylinder engine with “M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics”.

Both will also feature the brand’s so-called “M xDrive” all-wheel-drive system, which BMW says will provide “maximum traction and loss-free distribution of drive torque for achieving extremely dynamic handling characteristics”, as well as an active M rear axle differential.

“With their M-specific performance characteristics, the BMW X3 M and the BMW X4 M will set benchmarks in terms of dynamics in their respective vehicle segment,” said Frank van Meel, president of BMW M.

BMW has previewed its first-ever X3 M and X4 M in prototype form at the Nurburgring and both models will be equipped with a newly developed inline-six turbocharged engine.

BMW is preparing to unleash M performance versions of the X3 and X4 in the near future and the 2 prototype models, wrapped in camouflage, made an appearance at the Nurburgring DTM races this past weekend to further hone their dynamic abilities.

Both vehicles sport large air intakes, 4 integrated tailpipes and specific M features to optimise aerodynamics. The big news, however, is that a newly developed in-line 6-cylinder turbocharged engine will power the duo and although BMW has yet to divulge outputs, we expect power to come in somewhere around 336 kW.

Both models will feature xDrive all-wheel drive adapted from the M5 as well as an active M rear axle differential to enhance cornering ability and agility.

The locally-built BMW X3 is currently on sale in South Africa and the BMW X4 is due to launch locally this month which means that the M versions will likely arrive in early 2019. BMW South Africa has yet to provide exact dates of arrival for the X3 M and X4 M. We will keep you updated as soon as more detail is revealed.

BMW X3 And X4 M Could Get Over 500 HP Thanks To Competition Pack Offering

BMW has recently previewed full on M versions of its latest X3 and X4 featuring new engines evolving from those of the current M3 and M4. While the Munich-based automaker has only exposed the idea last year, there are now reports that the two SUVs will be equipped with the Competition Package.

Under the bonnet of the BMW X3 M and X4 M is a heavily reworked version of the S55 powering the M3 and M4. Codenamed S58, the 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine is supposed to deliver around 450 hp (335 kW) in the base models. While these are healthy numbers, the Bavarian SUVs still lack quite a few horses compared to rivals such as Mercedes-AMG’s GLC 63 S, this is where the rumoured optional upgrade comes in.

With 503 hp (375 kW) from a 4.0-litre twin-turbo V8, the Mercedes-AMG GLC 63 S and its coupe variant offer a lot more power than the forthcoming BMW X3 M and X4 M. The Competition Package however, is said to bump up both BMW SUVs to around 500 hp (372 kW) which should put it right in the shout of the AMG, as well as the Alfa Romeo Stelvio Quadrifoglio which sources 505 hp (376 kW) also from a twin-turbo V6.

As with BMW’s usual low-riding, non-SUV models that have receive the performance treatment, the Competition Package offers a bit more than just a tweaked engine. There is a massaged chassis and suspension system as well as slight cosmetic upgrades that are also included in the kit.

While BMW has already previewed both base models of the X3 M and X4 M, it is said that we will have to wait until the middle of next year to see unveiling of the two performance SUVs, with the Competition Package probably following a few months later.

BMW X3 M And X4 M Get Rendered Accurately

BMW already gave us a preview of the X3 M and X4 M in prototype form last month but these vehicles had a thin layer of camouflage to prevent us from “seeing” the final product.

Luckily for us, BimmerPost took on the task of digitally removing the camo giving us an unimpeded look at the completed exterior designs.

When comparing them to the regular X3 and X4 models, the visual changes are exactly what you would expect on a M model. They include revised front and rear fascias, enlarged air intakes, beefed-up side skirts, bespoke wheels, and subtle lip spoilers extending from the rear of the roof all adding to the presence of the SUV.

The manufacturer has not confirmed performance specifications for the duo but we do know they will make use of a straight six-cylinder engine with a pair of turbochargers. Some reports suggest both models will deliver 454 hp and could be later joined by Competition variants that lift grunt towards the 500 hp mark.

BMW X3 M Design Leaked via Infotainment System

In September last year we saw the first prototypes of the upcoming BMW X3 M and X4 M but now thanks to a slip up we see our first decent look at the front of the hotted up mid-size SUV.

The front end seen above is a shot from the iDrive infotainment system which shows the upcoming production model will have an aggressive front fascia with a black twin kidney grille. Bigger changes occur further below as the high-performance crossover has a front new bumper with large air intakes that feature honeycomb mesh inserts. We can also see a black bar above the central air intake as well as scoops out near the outer edges.

As you move further back you see the typical front fender side vents and the prominent side skirts. The aerodynamic mirror caps are present and it is finished off with a new five-spoke alloy wheel design.

Specifications on the new sporty SUV’s are a little bit scarce but the company has already confirmed the X3 M will have a “newly developed straight six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo technology and high-revving characteristics.”

We are expecting the twin-turbo 3.0-litre inline-six to develop up to 474 hp (353 kW) which will likely be paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission and an M xDrive all-wheel drive system.

There is also talk about Competition variantswhich could pack as much as 500 hp (372 kW) which would really make this a serious contender for the
Mercedes-AMG’s GLC 63 S.

Coming soon: BMW teases X3 M and X4 M hot crossovers

BMW is getting ready to unleash its long-awaited M-powered compact crossover twins - the X3 M and X4 M.

While it hasn’t confirmed the exact reveal dates, a new teaser video (below) showing lighty disguised prototypes promises that they are “coming soon”. A Geneva Motor Show reveal would be a logical assumption, however, given that the show is just around the corner, as in early March.

The final specs and other key facts are still under wraps for now, with BMW only stating that the pair will come with a “newly developed six-cylinder engine with M TwinPower Turbo” technology. No word yet on exactly how different it’ll be the from the six that powers the current M3 and M4, nor how much power it’ll have, although various sources abroad state that it’ll offer more than 330kW. The gearbox will likely be an eight-speed torque converter automatic.

BMW M President is promising class-leading dynamics, and on that note BMW has confirmed that the X3 M and X4 M will have a similar xDrive all-wheel-drive system to the latest M5, as well as an active M rear differential.

BMW M GmbH expanded its high-performance model line-up to include models in the mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segments for the first time. The BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M set the benchmark for dynamic excellence, agility and precision in their respective classes.

Also new is the launch alongside the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M of their Competition siblings. The BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition will capture customers' imagination with their extra power and exclusive appointments.

New six-cylinder in-line engine, M Steptronic transmission, M xDrive

The addition to the BMW M GmbH line-up of its first high-performance models in the mid-size Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV) and Sports Activity Coupe (SAC) segments also heralds the arrival of a newly developed sixcylinder in-line engine in two variants. The engine stands out with its familiar M high-revving character, the latest M TwinPower Turbo technology update, plus track-tested cooling and oil supply systems. It develops 353 kW/480 hp in the BMW X3 M and BMW X4 M, and an even mightier 375 kW/510 hp in the BMW X3 M Competition and BMW X4 M Competition.

The standout performance characteristics of the 3.0-litre units are encapsulated by the linear power development that is such an M speciality, plus a hunger for revs quelled only by the engine's limiter. And all to the tune of an arresting soundtrack. Like the maximum output figure, peak torque of 600 Nm (442 lb-ft) also represents a new high point for a six-cylinder in-line petrol engine from BMW. The ongoing development of M TwinPower Turbo technology, coupled with the inclusion of two gasoline particulate filters and four catalytic converters, also ensures the high-performance engines can claim remarkable efficiency and exceptionally low emissions.

New BMW X3M and X4M get 503bhp Competition version

Two new SUVs aim to deliver M3 and M4 driving experience, according to BMW

BMW M has added two new SUV models to its burgeoning line-up in the form of the X3M and X4M.

Set for UK delivery in September following a public debut at April’s Shanghai motor show, they are among seven new dedicated M models planned for 2019. The M8 Coupé, Cabriolet and Gran Coupé and new X5M and X6M models are all also due by the year’s end.

“Our philosophy from the start was to deliver an M3 and M4 driving experience, but with the added assurance of four-wheel drive and a slightly higher seating position,” said Lars Beulke, BMW M product manager. “We originally referred to them internally as the M3X and M4X.”

Following the strategy taken with other M models, the X3M and X4M will be sold in both standard and Competition guises from the outset. Together, they take aim at the Mercedes-Benz GLC 63 and Porsche Macan Turbo with a new twin-turbocharged 3.0-litre petrol engine known internally as the S58.

Based on the B58 engine already used by the X3 and X4 M40i, the inline six-cylinder unit delivers 473bhp and 442lb ft in standard form and 503bhp and 442lb ft in the X3M and X4M Competition – the latter of which receives a louder M Sport exhaust as standard.

Power is channelled to all four wheels via an eight-speed torque-converter automatic gearbox and a variable M xDrive four-wheel-drive system, with an electronic rear differential and torque vectoring system. The Competition versions of the X3M and X4M are said to achieve 26.9mpg and 26.7mpg combined respectively.

There is no pure rear-wheel-drive mode, with maximum traction the priority. Base cars come with 20in wheels shod with 255/45 (front) and 265/45 (rear) tyres. Competition models feature 21in rims with 255/40 (front) and 265/40 (rear) tyres.

The standard X3 and X4’s MacPherson strut (front) and multi-link (rear) suspension has been heavily reworked, as have the variable ratio steering system and the brakes, which use 395mm steel discs and four-pot calipers up front and 370mm steel discs with floating calipers at the rear.

Beulke said a significant amount of engineering was focused on stiffening the front-end structure of the standard SUVs to improve agility and steering precision. To this end, the X3M and X4M receive a sturdy strut brace across the front suspension towers as well as additional bracing below the engine.

The fastest model – the 1970kg X4M Competition – is capable of 0-62mph in 4.1sec and reaching a governed top speed of 155mph, with an optional M Driver’s package allowing the limit to be raised to 177mph.

The X3M and X4M were not conceived for off-road driving, but Beulke said both perform “remarkably well” away from Tarmac, thanks to the locking effect of the rear differential. The new S58 engine comes with efficiency-boosting tech including brake energy recuperation. The most economical of the new M models, the 1970kg X3M, is rated at 26.9mpg combined and emits 239g/km of CO2.

The X3M and X4M receive a number of traditional BMW M styling changes including a heavily structured front bumper with larger cooling ducts and a honeycomb insert, an M-specific grille, more prominent sills underneath the doors, M Sport wing mirrors, a larger spoiler element atop the tailgate and a new rear bumper bookmarked by four round tailpipes.

For added effect, the X3M Competition and X4M Competition come with an optional M carbonfibre package with blackened details. Inside, there is the latest M Sport multi-function steering wheel, instruments, gearlever and seats, with M-specific trims and upholstery.

BMW has announced pricing of the Competition versions, with the X3M starting at £77,070 and the X4M starting at £79,990.

New BMW X3 M and X4 M (plus Competition models) revealed!

BMW has whipped the covers off its new X3 M and X4 M high-performance SUVs, which will also be offered in full-fat Competition guise.

In fact, the hotter X3 M Competition and X4 M Competition variants will launch in South Africa in the third quarter of 2019, with the X3 M and X4 M set to become available locally “at a later stage”.

Under the bonnet you’ll find what the Bavarian automaker describes as the “most powerful straight-six petrol engine ever to see action in a BMW M car”. The twin-turbo 3,0-litre six-pot generates some 353 kW and 600 N.m in “standard” guise, with the Competition models gaining a further 22 kW (for a whopping total of 375 kW, with peak torque unchanged).

Mated to all four corners (BMW says it has employed a version of the rear-biased M xDrive all-wheel-drive system first used in the M5) via an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission, the engine allows a sprint from zero to 100 km/h in a claimed 4,2 seconds in the case of the X3 M and X4 M, with the Competition variants hitting three figures one-tenth quicker. The top speed of each of the four derivatives is limited to 250 km/h, although specifying the optional M Driver’s Package raises that figure to 280 km/h in the case of the standard models and 285 km/h for the Competition variants.

The standard M-specific suspension features three settings that alter the reactions of the electronically controlled dampers, while M-specific steering (including M Servotronic and variable ratio) plus M compound brakes are also included. In addition, 20-inch M light-alloy wheels ship standard (and 21-inch items for the Competition models).

While the X3 M and X4 M feature a handful of M-specific exterior design features, the Competition variants are set apart by a high-gloss black finish for the kidney grille surround, side-mirror caps and M gills, as well as the rear spoiler. The flagship models furthermore each feature an M Sport exhaust system.

Inside the standard models, you’ll find electrically adjustable sports seats, Vernasca leather upholstery, an M-specific cockpit, an M leather steering wheel and an M gearshift selector lever. Competition models add M Sport seats with extended Merino leather upholstery, model-specific door-sill plates and a model nameplate on the centre console.

An optional M Carbon exterior package will also be available at a later stage, adding elements in carbon fibre-reinforced plastic for the front air intakes, the air blades in the front apron, the rear diffuser and the side-mirror caps (plus a rear spoiler in the same material in the case of the Competition models).
