Recently, BMW has seen a series of embargoes being broken by publications from around the world, and now, the new X6 makes no exception. First leaked on Instagram and then further on the Interwebs, the new G06 BMW X6 shows up, fully unclothed. The official debut is scheduled for tomorrow, but in the mean time, we get to see some shots of the new coupe crossover. We’ve already got the idea of what the new X6 will look like from the X6 M leak that happened last month. Unlike the previous generation, the new X6 has more presence on the road and and a more attractive rear end, at least in our opinion.

The taillights will be getting a new shape which are slimmer and slightly wider, the roofline will retain the coupe look and the front-end resembles the G05 X5 cu larger kidneys than the previous models. As a novelty, the new kidney grills are illuminated which might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but we’ll reserved judgement until we see it in person.

Pictures of the all-new BMW X6 have emerged on the Internet. Here's what we know so far.

Codenamed G06, this new BMW X6 is due for an imminent reveal. From what these leaked photos suggest, we're looking at a bolder and more aggressive-looking BMW X6 and we think it looks particularly attractive from the rear.

Under the bonnet, you can expect the usual array of petrol and diesel engines based on the current powertrains found in the X5 and X7. There'll likely be flagship M and M Competition derivatives too. All models will likely feature xDrive all-wheel drive too.

New BMW X6 leaks ahead of tonight's official reveal

Porsche Cayenne Coupe rival is seen to adopt evolutionary styling approach in new images, and is on sale later this year

BMW is set to pull the covers off its new X6 late this evening, but what look like press images of the coupé-SUV have leaked out already.

Published first on Instagram before a number of BMW fan sites picked them up, the images show the new X6 will continue the design theme of the last-generation model, but with detail changes mirroring the rest of the firm's now fully up-to-date X line-up.

The front end gets a more aggressive interpretation of BMW's SUV face, while the roofline tapers and slopes down at the rear in true coupé style. At the back, the stretched LED tail-lights are heavily inspired by the X4.

Details, as well as the interior, remain under wraps, but we know that much of the car's mechanical make-up, engines and technology will be borrowed from its X5 sibling.

Production will remain at BMW’s US plant in Spartanburg, South Carolina, where prototypes are already being built for testing. X6 prototypes have previously been spotted on the same outing as a flagship X6 M, which will use the M5’s 4.4-litre V8 for an anticipated output of 600bhp or more.

New BMW X6 arrives with revamped styling and engines

Luxury SUV takes the fight to Porsche's new Cayenne Coupe with honed looks and 523bhp M50i range-topper

BMW has revealed the third-generation X6 SUV, with a design revamp and refreshed engine range to take on rivals such as theAudi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupé.

The new car sits alongside the recently launched fourth-generation X5and new X7 in the Bavarian firm’s growing SUV range. The launch line-up will include the petrol-engined xDrive40i and M50i and diesel-powered xDrive30d and M50d – the latter two of which have been confirmed for the UK.

Pricing has yet to be announced, though the initial line-up is expected to start at around £63,000 for the new X6 xDrive30d, rising to about £75,000 for the M50d.

Heading the petrol line-up is the M50i, with a turbocharged 4.4-litre V8 with 523bhp and 553lb ft. It has a claimed 0-62mph time of 4.3sec and a limited 155mph top speed, with fuel consumption of 27.1mpg and CO2 emissions of 237g/km on the WLTP test cycle. The xDrive40i uses a turbocharged 3.0-litre in line six-cylinder unit delivering 335bhp and 332lb ft for a 0-62mph time of 5.5sec.

The M50d runs a quad-turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 engine developing 394bhp and 560lb ft. It is claimed to reach 62mph in 5.2sec, with a top speed of 155mph, achieving 40.9mpg and 181g/km.

The volume seller in the UK is likely to be the xDrive30d, with a turbocharged 3.0-litre V6 diesel with 261bhp and 457lb ft, delivering a 0-62mph time of 6.5sec, a 143mph top speed, 46.3mpg and 159g/km.

The new BMW X6 has grown by 26 millimetres in exterior length over the outgoing model (to 4,935 mm) and by 15 mm (to 2,004 mm) in width. It now stands 6 mm lower (at 1,696 mm) and combines dynamically stretched proportions with an extremely powerful appearance, which is enhanced by a wider front track (+44 mm to 1,684 mm). The car's wheelbase has increased by 42 mm to 2,975 millimetres, and the new model also has a lower centre of gravity than its predecessor, which helps to give the new BMW X6 its exceptional agility and handling poise.

New (third-gen) BMW X6 revealed and SA engine options confirmed!

The new BMW X6 has been revealed, with the third-generation version of Munich’s large coupé-style SUV growing in size and gaining more powerful engines.

Scheduled to arrive in South Africa in November 2019, the local X6 range – which will again be built at Plant Spartanburg in the United States – will comprise only the M50i and M50d variants at launch.

The new model has grown in length by 26 mm to 4 935 mm, while 15 mm has been added to its width (taking the figure to 2 004 mm). It now stands some six millimetres lower (at 1 696 mm), while space between its axles has increased by 42 mm to 2 975 mm.

The newcomer will be offered in standard trim, xLine guise and M Sport specification (see image below). The X6 M50i and X6 M50d variants will ship standard on 21-inch light-alloy wheels. BMW furthermore says the new X6 will be optionally available with an “illuminated” kidney grille, with the function being activated by opening or closing the car (although it can be switched on and off manually, too).

I still find this particular vehicle exceedingly vulgar and ostentatious. Like the only reason you buy it is because it is expensive and impractical. A pure salary flaunt with no redeeming features.

BMW reveals all-new X6 with bold design, illuminating grille

Originally hitting the scene as a daring coupe-inspired crossover that divided opinion, BMW’s X6 has become a key player in BMW’s ‘X’ family and now enters its third generation.

As you’d expect, the new X6 graduates to the latest CLAR architecture that underpins the recently-launched X5, inheriting a raft of technologies in the process, but this time around BMW has given it a more distinctive design.

Whereas the previous X6 closely resembled the X5 from the front and rear, the new X6 gets a more shapely kidney grille and bolder front bumper, while round back it has slimmer taillights inspired by the 8 Series. Yet its biggest party trick is that the aforementioned grille now illuminates when you open and close the car - and this showy function can also be controlled manually by the driver and activated while driving.

For the record, the new X6 is 26mm longer than its predecessor, as well as 15mm wider and 6mm lower, while the wheelbase has taken a 42mm stretch to the benefit of interior legroom. Boot volume is better than you might expect for a coupe-inspired vehicle, at 580 litres.

The X6 is scheduled to launch in South Africa from November 2019 in two guises: M50i and M50d. Internationally BMW is also offering xDrive40i and xDrive30d models.

This is the new BMW X6 that will take the fight to its rivals which include the Mercedes-Benz GLE Coupe, Audi Q8 and Porsche Cayenne Coupe. Perhaps the most striking part of the new X6’s styling is its kidney grille, which for the first time, can be optionally illuminated. Yes, you read that correctly, the grille actually lights up. This should not come as a surprise though, as the oversize grilles seen on the X7 and 7-Series have been a source of debate in recent times and this latest feature will undoubtedly fuel the flames and get people talking about the brand. BMW says that the grille can be turned on and off by opening and closing the car or it can be manually activated/deactivated.

BMW paints new X6 in light-absorbing ‘Vantablack’

Frankfurt motor show concept wears non-reflective paint usually reserved for aerospace applications

BMW has revealed a one-off, black version of its new X6 SUV, finished in a shade intended to emphasise the silhouette of the second-generation model, and so dark it obscures most design details.

To be revealed at Frankfurt motor show, the model has been finished in ‘Vantablack’ paint by Newhaven-based Surrey Nanosystems. The non-reflective colour can make an object appear two-dimensional and, as a result, is “a rather unsuitable vehicle paint finish” according to BMW.

Asked why the new X6 will be painted in this way, the model’s designer, Hussein Al Attar, said: “Internally, we often refer to the BMW X6 as “The Beast.” I think that says it all.

“The Vantablack VBx2 finish emphasises this aspect and makes the BMW X6 look particularly menacing. Moreover, the BMW X6 has always been the most provocative and in-your-face model in our portfolio. So why not emphasise this even further, with a finish that simply captivates the viewer’s attention?”

‘Vanta’ stands for Vertically Aligned Nano Tube Array, and refers to the microscopic carbon structure that forms the basis of the finish. Each strand is 5000 times thinner than a human hair, at 14-50 micrometers long and 20 nanometers in diameter.

Here's the new BMW X6 finished in the world's 'blackest' black paint

BMW has revealed what it describes as a “spectacular one-off” version of its new X6 wearing a Vantablack VBx2 nanostructure paint finish.

Featuring what the Munich-based firm bills as the world’s "blackest black" paint, the show car is the result of a collaboration between BMW and Surrey NanoSystems.

BMW claims its X6 is the “first and only vehicle in the world” to feature this Vantablack VBx2 paint finish.

The company explains that a surface coated in Vantablack loses its defining features to the human eye, with objects thus appearing two-dimensional. This, says the firm, can be interpreted by the brain as “staring into a hole or even a void”, making Vantablack a rather unsuitable vehicle paint finish.

For this reason, BMW says its special X6 was coated in the VBx2 variant initially developed for use in architectural and scientific applications. This coating can be sprayed on and has a one percent total hemispherical reflectance, meaning it is still considered “super black” while enabling a small amount of reflection from every angle.

“We turned down numerous requests from various automobile manufacturers in the past,” said Ben Jensen, founder and chief technical officer of Surrey NanoSystems. “It took the BMW X6 and its unique, expressive design for us to entertain the idea.”

Vantablack is the world's blackest paint. It's so black that light is sucked into the paint and the result is a finish that is mind-blowingly weird.

The BMW X6 with a Vantablack finish is set to be revealed at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show. If you're not aware, Vantablack is a unique paint that can absorb 99% of light and remove all reflections. It tricks the brain into thinking its staring into a void. It also has the abilities to hide shape and definition.

The BMW X6 Vantablack show car is the result of a collaboration between BMW, Surrey Nano Systems and Levitation 29. Ben Jensen, Vantablack inventor and founder of Surrey Nano Systems, said “VBx2 with its one-per-cent reflectance provides just enough of a hint of shape”. The spectacular one-off vehicle highlights the expressive and precise design language and confident, dominant and muscular appearance of the new BMW X6 to perfection. Asked whether he was pleased with the final car, Ben Jensen commented; “I think it went beyond all our expectations because of the size of the car, its distinctive shape and how imposing it is”.

DRIVEN: BMW X6 M50i xDrive Steptronic

There is something special about driving on Germany’s autobahns. The new X6 boasts full connectivity including Wi-Fi, and detected speed limits along with restrictions imposed by the many roadworks (just like here). The speed limit is displayed in front of the driver. When this changed to a white circle with slanted black stripes, it meant there was no limit and it didn’t take long to accelerate to 200 km/h. It’s still strange to think this is legal…

The unknown roads and navigation directions dictated this was a one-off. The sheer size of the X6 immediately faded away on pulling into peak-hour Munich traffic. The navigation worked well, manoeuvrability was a breeze, the M50i’s V8 soundtrack a pleasure and controls easily mastered. It felt as effortless to drive as a hatchback.

While I’d be happy with an X4, there is something to be said for the X6’s status appeal.
