The most powerful M car ever built & M's first bespoke M model since the M1. Production version out end of 2022./

BMW XM Concept

At Art Basel's 2021 Miami Beach show, BMW M has presented an expressive new vehicle concept on the global stage for the first time. The BMW Concept XM looks ahead to the most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production, which is set to begin at the end of next year. At the same time, the BMW Concept XM shines the spotlight on standout aspects of the M brand. Electrification underpins an extraordinary driving experience which allows the driver to both glide along in near silence and enjoy the time-honoured pleasure of high performance, M-style. The BMW Concept XM provides a first glimpse of the new front-end design for BMW's forthcoming luxury-class models. It will also introduce its audience to a highly progressive and distinctive take on BMW X model design and an all-new form of luxury and sense of space for the interior.

The series-production model - the BMW XM - will be built from the end of 2022 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA, the most important sales market for the new high-performance car. BMW M will therefore be introducing its first standalone vehicle since the legendary BMW M1 in the year it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The BMW XM will be available in plug-in hybrid form only and exclusively as an M model.

The bold exterior styling of the Concept XM reflects the car's exceptional performance attributes: dynamism, agility and precision, plus an all-electric range of up to 80 km. The newly developed M Hybrid drive system in the BMW Concept XM brings together a V8 engine and a high-performance electric motor to develop maximum output of 550 kW/750 hp and peak torque of 1,000 Nm (737 lb-ft). The first electrified vehicle from BMW M GmbH in the high-performance segment is therefore pointing the way for the future of the brand.

The new BMW Concept XM is the most powerful M car ever built

And this 740bhp V8 hybrid – arriving in 2022 - is only the *second* standalone M car

*Sigh*. BMW M has presented only its second ever standalone model, and it is… this. This is the new BMW Concept XM, and when it arrives as a production car in 2022, it’ll be the most powerful BMW M car ever built. That’s right, something that looks and goes roughly like this will be on sale in 2022.

The first standalone BMW M car was of course 1978’s M1, that graceful, mid-engined slice of supercar excellence. But we don’t live in 1978 and people aren’t really queuing up to buy graceful, mid-engined slices of supercar excellence anymore. BMW M is only building what the good, rational folk of planet Earth desire.

And they desire power. When it goes on sale at the end of next year, the BMW XM will arrive sporting a monster plug-in hybrid drivetrain. This concept car marries a V8 to a ‘high-performance’ electric motor to develop 740bhp and a staggering 737lb ft of torque. (Though perhaps not so staggering when you consider how much bulk it has to power, one suspects.)

We’re promised not only “dynamism, agility and precision”, but an electric-only range of up to 50 miles. The first electrified BMW M car will apparently point the way “for the future of the brand”. You know the other thing that points the way forward for the future of BMW? The front of the Concept XM, a version of which will appear on a luxury BMW next year.

New BMW XM is M-only, 740bhp hybrid SUV

Mega-powered concept is first bespoke M model since the M1, and the division's first hybrid

BMW’s M division will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 2022 with only the second bespoke model in its history: the XM.

Closely previewed by this show car, the Concept XM, the large SUV will be BMW M’s first-ever electrified model, with a high-performance 740bhp plug-in hybrid powertrain built around its famed 4.4-litre petrol V8.

In positioning, the XM will sit atop the BMW range and target models such as the Audi RS Q8, Porsche Cayenne Coupé Turbo S E-Hybrid and Range Rover Sport SVR.

Derived from the BMW X7, it is effectively an X8 if you follow BMW’s traditional naming convention, whereby the more rakish, coupé-style versions of its SUVs get even-numbered names. However, the XM will be sold solely as an M car – the first and only BMW since the seminal M1 supercar of 1978 to claim that exclusivity.

It gets completely bespoke styling, drivetrain hardware and technology to further justify its creation and positioning; and it departs much further in its styling from the model on which it’s based than the X4 and X6.

Q&A: Frank Van Meel, Chairman, BMW M

Is this shift to luxury a new approach for the M division?

“The feedback from our customers is that they love our cars but would want even more expressive luxury from them. This is what we’ve done here. It’s the next step for us at M: expressive luxury.”

How close to production is the Concept XM?

“To say exactly is hard. It really is more than 90%, but there will be so many detail changes, as many of the features, such as the darkened numberplate, can’t be homologated. So these things will be approached in a different way.”

Why is it a hybrid?

“We’ve said we will go electric this decade with all our models. We have it already with M Performance in the i4 and the iX, but this is now the first high-performance electrified M.”

Is this the V8’s last hurrah?

“I wouldn’t say that, because our customers still have a big demand for V8, so we won’t shut them off. But to electrify the V8 allows us to keep it on the market longer.”

Why not a full EV?

“We have a lot of markets that aren’t able to be fully electric yet. And with a high-performance car, electric technology really needs to be pushed further; and only the Porsche Taycan has done that. The US is our biggest market, and the feedback from them was not to go electric and they wished to keep a V8.

“Sales of M in 2019 in the US were our strongest ever, with huge demand for the X5 M and X6 M. So this is a vote from our customers to go in that direction, and push the V8 to hybrid. It’s a big step to go hybrid, but customers do expect this.”

BMW Concept XM breaks cover as preview for future flagship SUV

The BMW Concept XM has been officially unveiled after a series of teasers and leaks as a design study that previews the upcoming flagship SUV. The model boasts a number of bold design cues including a large kidney grille and angular body lines.

Presented at the Art Basel Miami Beach Show, the BMW Concept XM looks ahead to the most powerful BMW M car ever to go into series production, which is set to begin at the end of next year. The brand says that electrification underpins the new model’s driving experience which allows the driver to both glide along in near silence and enjoy the time-honoured pleasure of high performance, M-style.

The BMW XM Concept provides a first glimpse of the new front-end design for BMW’s forthcoming luxury-class models. It will also introduce its audience to a highly progressive and distinctive take on BMW X model design and an all-new form of luxury and sense of space for the interior.

The series-production model which will be called the BMW XM, will be built from the end of 2022 at BMW Group Plant Spartanburg in the USA, the most important sales market for the new high-performance car. BMW M will therefore be introducing its first standalone vehicle since the legendary BMW M1 in the year it celebrates its 50th anniversary. The BMW XM will be available in plug-in hybrid form only and exclusively as an M model.

BMW Concept XM Previews High-Performance Hybrid SUV

This outrageous-looking concept is the BMW Concept XM and it will be coming to life in 2022. Here’s what we know so far.

The last time BMW M made a standalone vehicle, it was the M1 and it was in 1978. It marked the debut of many things, like a mid-engined setup and back then, 201 kW and 329 Nm from a 3.5-litre straight-6 motor made it a bona-fide supercar.

More than 40 years later comes the second standalone BMW M product. Meet the BMW Concept XM, a high-performance hybrid V8 SUV. The claimed engine outputs are jaw-dropping: 551 kW and 1 000 Nm plus, the ability to travel a theoretical range of up to 48 km on pure electric power.

Right now there are no details like the size of the engine or battery pack or even performance details, but given that it is an M product, we reckon that it’ll hit 100 kph in under 4 seconds with ease.

The big question marks here are with regards to the styling. Car design is an entirely subjective affair; one person’s art is another’s trash, and we’ve given BMW some leeway in the past for penning some controversial and polarising designs. Think of that bold grille seen on the current generation of BMW M3 and the overall craziness that is the BMW iX. This, however, looks like something from a futuristic sci-fi movie.

Daring BMW XM Concept previews upcoming flagship SUV, and most potent M car ever

BMW's design chief Domagoj Dukec has made it abundantly clear that the German carmaker is not afraid of those who criticise its increasingly large grilles. And with the new BMW XM Concept, the design team is well and truly throwing down the gauntlet.

BMW says the new concept previews the frontal design of forthcoming luxury-class models, but it’s also a foretaste of a new XM flagship SUV that will be the first standalone M division model since the BMW M1 of the 1970s.

The BMW XM production model will also be the first electrified M car and, on top of that, the most powerful ever, the carmaker says. The concept is powered by a hybrid powertrain that pairs a V8 engine with a high-performance electric motor to produce system outputs of 550kW and 1000Nm.

Furthermore, owners will be able to plug it in to achieve a claimed all-electric range in the region of 80km.

“The BMW Concept XM represents a complete re-imagining of the high-performance car segment,” BMW CEO Franciscus van Meel said. “It underlines the ability of BMW M GmbH to break with established conventions and push boundaries in order to offer fans of the brand the ultimate driving experience.

Sies...

BMW, please rehire Chris Bangle, his designs were fugly but not as fugly as the shyte you are pumping out now.

As a movie prop AWESOME.
As a car to subject the public to and pitch as a celebration of M, NO.
Stop it BMW.
Make something beautiful and classy.
Enough of this bus like nonsense and shock factor, it's not attractive.
