JOHANNESBURG – A dramatic early morning shootout between police and a gang of suspected truck hijackers, including real and fake police officers, has resulted in two of the alleged robbers being shot dead.

The suspects were dressed in police uniforms and driving a car with fake number plates and police decals.

The shootout took place in Midrand shortly after midnight following a brief car chase.

High calibre weapons such as an R5 assault rifle were recovered.

The Hawks' Paul Ramaloko says after the alleged truck hijacking gang noticed the police were following them, they tried to flee after opening fire on the officers.

“Five suspects were confronted. Two of them were killed during a shootout and three of them were arrested.”

He says after the shootout, the Hawks discovered tools believed to have been used in hijackings and business robberies.

“In the suspect’s vehicle we found two jamming devices. This gang is suspected of also being involved in truck hijackings.”

'Bogus cops might be linked to syndicate'

JOHANNESBURG – The Hawks are investigating whether a gang of suspected truck hijackers, who were involved in a shootout with police this morning, are linked to a bigger syndicate it’s been tracking for some time.

Two people were killed and three others arrested during the confrontation in Midrand after midnight.

One of the men arrested is a serving police officer.

Car signal jamming equipment and several weapons were recovered in the suspect's car, which was fitted with fake number plates and police decals.

The Hawk's Paul Ramaloko says, “We are going to continue with the investigation to try and see if these suspects are not linked to any other crimes.”

SHOOTOUT

The shooting occurred after the alleged truck hijacking gang noticed police following them and tried to flee by opening fire on the officers.

Ramaloko said, “Five suspects were confronted. Two of them were killed during a shootout and three of them were arrested.”

TWO KILLED, COP ARRESTED IN MIDRAND SHOOTING

Two suspected robbers disguised as policemen were killed in a shoot-out in Midrand, the Hawks said on Wednesday.

Three others, including a 35-year-old police constable, were arrested following a pursuit and shoot-out on Tuesday night, Captain Paul Ramaloko said.

"One of the Hawks' investigating officers narrowly escaped being shot in the face," he said.

Three of the suspects were dressed in police uniform, one in a police-issue bulletproof vest, and the other in civilian clothes. They were disguised as the province's K9 police unit.

"The gang is suspected of having been involved in several crimes disguised as police officers," Ramaloko said.

"The men, who are believed to be the blue-light gang, were accosted by the Hawks' team in Midrand. A chase ensued after the men were spotted driving in a cloned, marked police Chevrolet Cruze."

A shoot-out ensued and the chase ended in Midrand's Glen Austen area, along the Old Johannesburg Road and George Street.

The arrested constable was attached to the Olifantsfontein visible policing unit in Tembisa.

Four firearms were confiscated from the cloned police vehicle, including an R5 assault rifle, and two jamming devices.

The suspects were due to appear in the Midrand Magistrate's Court soon on charges of impersonating police officers, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition, and possession of a suspected stolen vehicle.
