Eish!!!! What a way NOT to start a mini-tour!

Johannesburg - The Springbok team have suffered a harrowing experience after an engine on their plane to Sydney exploded in a ball of flames.

The Springboks had taken off on their journey to Sydney on a Qantas Boeing 747 when engine 3 exploded with a 'big bang'. The aeroplane landed without further incident after a second safe emergency landing at Oliver Tambo Airport.

Several Springboks and Springbok staff members reported the incident on the social network Twitter.

Alistair Hargreaves - “@Al_Hargreaves: So Quantas have to send another aircraft which means 1 more night in jhb. @GaryGoldrugbyiq reckons he checked flames coming out the engine!”

“@Al_Hargreaves: "The Springboks have just landed... In joburg. One of the engines failed and we had to turn around. Beautiful start to the trip! #hack”

“@NelioDeSa: Springboks plane engine 3 exploded, thank God they managed to fly back to OR Tambo & land our precious Boks safely, think it's Quantas A380”

John Smit - “@JohnSmit123: Wow,just had to do an emergency landing at OR Tambo,we lost an engine after take off but safely landed now!My second safe emergency landing!”

Ashley Johnson - @ashj1605: Back in joburg!! Our nr3 enjin exploded with a big bang!!!

Gary Gold - “@GaryGoldrugbyiq: Wish I never watched #carteblanche on the #quantas 380 incident! Our engine just blew on take off and we just returned to Jhb, not much fun!”

Sports journalist Brendan Nel, speaking to rugby writer JJ Harmse had the following to say - “@BrendenNel: Just spoke to jj harmse who was on the plane. Says it wasn't that bad, they were on a 747 and not an A380...”

“@BrendenNel: Jj reckons it felt "like a speed bump" not too bad and they only knew when it was announced over the intercom.”

SARU has issued the following statement:

Media are advised that the Springboks' scheduled arrival media conference in Sydney on Saturday has been postponed. An update on a revised time will be issued in due course.

The Qantas flight on which the team was traveling was forced to return to OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg less than two hours after take off following the overheating and failure of engine No 3 on their Boeing 747. The aircraft returned safely to Johannesburg.

The Springboks will remain in Johannesburg for the night and will not depart for Australia before Saturday.

At the time of writing Qantas could not be reached for any further comment on the incident, nor could it be established whether or not it was related to other engine failures on recent Qantas flights as recently reported on MNET's Carte Blanche.

So what plane were they on, a 747 or a A380 as these dom rugbly players obviously can't tell the difference. Either way one engine out of four is no biggie.

Only air france do the 380 in sa once a week currently.

And why dont our team fly our plane [saa]

I would imagine they did buy an SAA ticket. However SAA and Qantas code share with each other meaning you could be on either airline, not just the airline you bought the ticket from.

Yeah we also made a bit of a boo boo by going on the word of one of the Boks on the flight. And Rosaudio was on our case! :p

We contacted him to ask if everything was okay and also asked if he can confirm the plane. He confirmed to us that it was a Qantas A380.

Really shouldn't have expected him to be able to tell the difference. Eish! :D

And all early media reports suggested that the engine exploded(which it didn't) because everyone on board said it exploded, including Gary Gold, Alistair Hargreaves and Ashleigh Johnson. In the end they just shut it down because of too much vibration and overheating.

Just glad they are back safely. That'll teach them to try out the new Proudly SA Taxi Airline.

And of course there is no shortage in jokes coming from the incident.

"Rumour has it that the Boks plane was going down very fast and there was no hope left. But then PDivvy shouted at the top of his lungs, the plane filled with helium and shot back up into the sky."

That the same Rolls Royce engine that failed on the other Quantas flight? You know, the one Quantas sued Rolls for 100 million over and won...
