Hi, quick question.

I'm on a Vodacom contract, and I want to buy a BB 9700 cash. Nashua Mobile has both MTN and Vodacom BB's in stock - MTN almost R1000 cheaper though! According to the sales person they are not network locked - but each has its own specific network software loaded.

It is a problem buying an MTN one and using it on Vodacom?

Thanks!

As far as I know you need to activate the phone on the network that you'll be using so that it doesn't register the pin on the MTN network at all.

Got that. Nothing else to worry about? GPS software etc.?

There is no problem buying an MTN branded phone and slipping in a Vodacom or CellC sim card, none of the phones from South Africa are network locked and you could easily brand the mtn phone to look like a Vodacom...

Reminder once you activate BIS, you will receive the service books that are loaded for example on MTN,VODACOM or CellC. Makesa no difference.

My recommendation to you would be sign-up for a 24month anytime top-up contract from MTN excluding bis for R300 per month and it will include R200... Just a suggestion :) Check out mtndirect.co.za , how much is the Recommended price from Vodacom and MTN

Good to hear, thanks.

MTN approx R5,500, Vodacom R6,500. To be honest I'm not keen on getting another sim card/number. I'm on Talk240 - and it is more than enough.

Vodacom just has satnav extra, on mtn you don't get anything preloaded. But if you can get garmap mobile afterwards for free. (I don't know if you need a contract for this though). Anyway, MTN's BIS seem to be the best at the moment, but I don't know if it is just in my area.

I just came back from CellC they selling the hand set for R5300, Edgars R6000 on Vodacom..

B@stards (Cell C, two shops) told me R6000. Anyways, got one at Makro (Vodacom) for R5,799.

Some of these sales people just make me shake my head. Went into Nashua Mobile in Canal Walk after phoning to find out whether they have stock. So the salesman says they don't have prepaid stock. After telling him I phoned earlier some stock does appear magically! Then he tells me if I buy a MTN one I could experience problems on Vodacom's BIS. Haven't heard of that before, maybe he was right? Interestingly, almost a R1,000 difference at Nashua between Vodacom and MTN's handsets. And MTN in Tyger Valley told me they don't sell phones prepaid period? Was quite a mission to get hold of this baby. :D

I always recommend shopping around, the lady down in Johannesburg was going to give me the hand set in cash perhaps it was launch introductory price at Cell C for launching BlackBerry ... If I recall correctly some hand sets are located for Contract and others for prepaid could be mistaken.

The consultant is talking BS, u could even flush the os and put vodacom branded.

Makro R5799 that's a good price :) I remember seeing the old price tag for R7000

Quite impressed with Vodacom so far. Activated BIS package online, and 10 minutes later it showed as ACTIVE. I've been able to setup my email accounts - waiting to see if it works now.

Just download the newest software for the 9700 from vodacoms website and don't delete the vendor file :) i think that should debrand the MTN stuff... correct me if i'm wrong.

Got a Vodacom one, but thanks! Everything setup and working 100%. Very easy, even without RTFM - which I normally do. :)
