In the case of the seller being declared insolvent, is it legal for the lawyer to add the bond cancellation costs (for 5 bonds!) to the account of the buyer?

Well someone has to pay for that and I don't see Mr/Mrs Insolvent doing that. I also don't see the lawyer doing it for charity. So if you want to property you pay it, if you don't want to pay it... don't get the property?

Ask the bank if the are prepared to waive or reduce set fees. Normally applicale if notice was not given to to bank. They are more likely to negotiate if you consider taking your bond with them.
Though in truth it should be added to what seller owes the bank, meaning their (bank's risks) are greater of not recovering the shortfall, not your problem of fault.

speak to an independent conveyancing attorney. And when you then speak to the bank remain cool and collected.
