I live quite far from the exchange, and thus my DS attenuation is quite high (±51dB). As a result, the maximum speed my line can sync at reliably is 1Mbps - anything higher and it syncs for a minute or so, drops, syncs again, etc.

I need to have a 4Mbps line, and I don't want to move to get it. I called Telkom, and managed to get someone who told me that they may be able to help - it would involve using some sort of a "booster" (his words) at the exchange. He has logged a fault, and I am expecting someone to call and start the process (he said that they would need to do some tests first).

Does anyone know what the guy was talking about? Or did I manage to get through to some very helpful, but alas clueless person?

Don't think so.
I suspect so.

Things like loop extenders do exist but it's a messy solution and I doubt Telkom would use them.
