I'm in need of some help...

My neighbour's pc crashed and we eventually found out his HDD is dead (ticking) It's an older model Acer machine he bought 2nd hand and 1st owner bought as new from a PC shop.

He managed to get another 160gb HDD (which we checked in my pc and is working fine) and when trying to load Windows it says "No Boot Manager" when booting from disc...

Can anyone point me in the right direction please?

*Edit* forgot to mention the new HDD he's got was formatted by the person he bought it from...

I would reinstall operating system.

Or boot into recovery and see if it still has the fixmbr command. Sorry, been a while since I had to work on a windows pc, but that was the command to fix the master boot record. Im more used to grub issues these days. Also make sure that the hard drive is selected as the bootable drive in the bios.

Okay, my information is out of date. Only follow my advice is you are running windows XP. If you are running windows vista and above there is a new command:

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927392

To run the Bootrec.exe tool, you must start Windows RE. To do this, follow these steps:
Put the Windows Vista or Windows 7 installation disc in the disc drive, and then start the computer.
Press a key when you are prompted.
Select a language, a time, a currency, a keyboard or an input method, and then click Next.
Click Repair your computer.
Click the operating system that you want to repair, and then click Next.
In the System Recovery Options dialog box, click Command Prompt.
Type Bootrec.exe, and then press ENTER.

Booting from which media, the install cd or the hard drive after windows was installed?

If it's after windows was installed did you remember to set the hard in the bios as the default boot device?
If you did this then try and boot from the install cd/usb again and select the repair option and then the fixmbr or something like that option from the command prompt.

Did you get the PC to boot up with the windows 7 disc??
if not remember to change your boot devices in your bios.
The optical drive has to be set as the number one priority, otherwise it will keep on trying to boot from the hdd and because their is no Windows on it you will keep getting the error message that says "no boot device"
