Hi,

I have an Acer Netbook. I have installed windows xp home and I have partitioned the hdd and installed Android Jellybean 4.2.

Now either way, I cant get both to appear in the GRUB menu, I see the Android, but no Windows XP. And from the windows side from boot.ini, I get an error from GRUb2, "Hal.dll missing"

Please help

thanks i'll try it
I got it to work. the windows has to be installed on NTFS partition then GRUB automatically picks it up.

WOrking fine but NTFS is sloooooow on SSD drives
:(

If I remember reading the windows help files correctly Fat32 was more likely to crash with hdd's over 10gb.

I installed Windows xp on FAT32. Ntfs makes ssd slow
Sorry to say, but that is completely wrong.

Unless you use exFAT over NTFS, it won't be faster, and even then, exFAT and NTFS is about the same. FAT32 is downright terrible.

So to back up with facts. I googled for "FAT32 vs NTFS SSD Benchmark" and guess what, the very first article by Tomshardware:

Conclusion: (quoting the important parts)
If you're using a Windows-based system, stick with NTFS. The default Windows file system consistently delivers the best performance on both SSD architectures we used for these tests: Samsung’s 830 series and the SandForce SF-2281 controller, represented by Zalman’s F1 drive. NTFS also has the advantage of being readable on various non-Windows operating systems, making it partially cross-OS-compatible.

Between exFAT and NTFS, it's almost a draw. NTFS's robust file permissions control puts it ahead of exFAT for an internal storage device, but exFAT's tolerance of hot-plugging make it a definite choice for USB-connected storage. As we mentioned earlier, FAT32- and exFAT-formatted drives cannot be used for modern operating system disks. But for users who like to have fast access to data, or who prefer to install programs on a different drive than the OS, these arguments begin to make more sense. In general, though, we're going to side with the experts (and Windows) on this one: stick with NTFS if it's internal, and use exFAT only for external storage.

you are 200% correct.

I have an 8GB SSD which is super slow. It came with NTFS.

I learned on this blog to update the firmware and use FAT32 instead, now the Netbook flies with XP home.
NTFS is dog slow, FAT32 is lightning fast. WHat it may say in theory, but in practice FAT32 is faster. Now i can run PS CS3, Office. NTFS i cant even open start menu.

I was on the virge of chucking this netbook, when I found this blog. Now I want to dual boot windows and android. But Android GRUB doesnnt pick up the FAT32 XP.

That article only mention you need FAT32 for the USB drive with the new firmware. Nowhere does it say you need FAT32 to make the SSD faster.

So your SSD should be faster with either FAT32 or NTFS, the problem wasn't the filesystem but bad firmware.

Do you actually have a 8GB SSD?

yes i have a 8GB SSD drive, as mentioned the NTFS makes the netbook unuable.
