Border troops won't be honoured

Well Ginsberg said "Whoever controls the media--the images--controls the culture."

Inverse of that is whoever controls the culture controls the media. Which culture is on the rise? Which culture is being replaced? Which history is being erased? You could therefore quite easily argue that the government currently in place controls the media.

own and control are two different things, the media industry has a long way to go before senior management are representative of the demographics of the country

what planet do you live on? senior management mean squat, they do as they're told to by the executives who do as they told by the board, who in turn does what its told to by the "shareholders"

there is no free media in this country, a vast majority of reporters work for either johnnic or naspers.

the million dollar question is who own's these companies

My 2 cents.

Whilst not arguing that white afrikaaners still have a lot of power in the media I find our media to be extremely varied and to carry many different viewpoints.

In TV you see every culture in SA plus the US,UK and AUS.

On paper you have many different political views being shown from the Citizen on one side to the Sowetan on the other and everything in between.

Radio is well covered as well. Just scan off your favourite channel a bit and you will see that.

On the internet it gets a bit more one sided with only a few large companies having good news sites. News24, IOL, iAfrica (and obviously myADSL :D)

However SABC does have a decent site as well.

I think if you want to talk about white afrikaaners still having the power you should ignore the media and look more towards the corporates. The worst of the lot being ABSA in my humble opinion.

...But this does not change the fact that they fought for an utterly morally corrupt regime in the conflict and share the blame for having allowed the Nazi's and their ideas to come to power in the first place.

So would this also hold true for the citizens of that country voting the Nazi party into power in 1933. Maybe they are to blame then. If so then citizens who fought for Mugabi in the late 70's are to blame for the countries present state, as to citizens of the Congo for any future possible stuff ups, or what about Iraq, Palestine, Israel, America, Britian or just about any country that has stuff ups for leaders. Election campaigns or military orders (given to these self same troops you have so little sympathy for) have little to do with what happens in the end when leaders go off the track.
If the policies and practises of leaders should reflect on the citizens of a country, or its troops for that matter, or other wise then I could go off about how all ANC voters are to blame for the corruption taking place in our government at the moment

@ xtermin8or, *and a few others* your generalisations of Afrikaners doesn't exactly make you out to be the shining example of tolerance and fighters for equality. I guess we all have racism in us, ...oops is that a generalisation

I'm pretty sure their families would not want their names on a wall amongst the terrorists, who are now treated like heroes.
I'm glad the country continues to eject people like you every year.

Angelo get a life.

So far this thread has done well in discussing this difficult issue and then you come in with this ****. I think it's time you left my country please

yep

generalisation is the same everywhere you go. everyone does it...
in fact i suspect we could agree alot more on this board if we stopped generalising.

What bull. Just another "we aren't fulfilling our promises so let's blame the white man"

And speaking of cultural identity, when was the last time you heard some black youths in discussion? I live near an English high school, and loads of students usually pass my house on their way home after school. They all have these fake american accents they get from MTV and the likes, so they aren't losing their cultural identity, they're rejecting it.

True dat. The government is doing everything in it's power to preserve African heritage that was neglected during apartheid. But the parents, are the ones encourging their kids to forsake their own culture. Most black kids don't know how to speak their venac anymore. It's all fake american accents. The kids are not to blame though, but it's the parents that think that a fancy accent will get their kids far in life. The minister of education will soon announce the option of mother tongue instruction for the first six years of schooling. I'm sure many parents will reject this as being non-progressive and so on, not actually knowing that their kids have a much better chance of learning things if they are taught in their own language.

So people who made a great contribution to the freedoms that we all enjoy are labeled terrorists and you think "the thread has done well"?

The only difference between a terrorist and a freedom fighter, is the point of view. If you were a victim of the Kerkstraat bombings (both black and white), would you think of those responsible as terrorists or freedom fighters?

And... I think parents just tend to ignore their kids in general... not many close knit families - the kids take on their own identity from media and friends - what ever is pop culture is their culture (in general). if more parents were parents, then kids may find it easier to be unique...

Traditional culture is overrated anyhow... often the points pushed as important are not really that important for lifeskills. I think each family should have it's own unique culture - which comes from being close and spending more time together right from young.... love and attention tends to grow on kids from young... and gets harder to bring in later. It's at home that love and tolerance can really be taught.

They have not been labeled terrorists by everyone. Try reading all the postings before jumping to idiotic conclusions.

As has been said by others, terrorist/freedom fighter is the same thing. Killing people is never a great contribution.

I am taking offense because you have self righteously told him that the country wants to eject him which is utter bullsh!t.

Everyone is free to live here and disagree with how things are done at the same time
