So I believe some modems handle this a little better than others?

Friend has an issue with disconnection and his line isn't great (7.6db SNR down and 52 attenuation).

What modem is known to cling to the line until the end?

D-Link 2500u.

I don't think you can buy them new anymore, look for a modem that uses Broadcom.

Most if not all of Telkom's IMAX/MSAN units are Huawei. DSLAMs are another manufacturer, and I don't think there are very many left on the network.
I found the Huawei xDSL routers to sync the best. Not sure what chipset is in them though.
I have 2x Huawei HG659 and they have never dropped sync, even on a noisy line.

EDIT: just checked they have Broadcom BCM63168 chipsets.

I have an ASUS DSL-N14u

On a problematic line, it syncs at a lower speed than other routers, but the line is a hell of a lot more stable.

I have a 10Mbps line that on a good day has a SnR of 6.5dB up and 6.0dB down. My ASUS router syncs at just over 5Mbps, sometimes lower depending on the gods and the internet connection mostly works, except I can't do any gaming.

My other router, Zyxel something or another, Telkom issued, does sync at 10Mbps, but it keeps losing sync and absolutely buggerall works.

Cisco.
8xx series router in this case, say 887VA.
All roads lead to a Cisco in the end.
