I believe this was a well known German brand; they are back in action.

"The new company will be backed up financially by Chinese truck manufacturer Foton."

"This mid-size SUV prototype, which is close to series production, will be the first vehicle since the 1960s to wear the legendary diamond-shaped Borgward badge."

First we have the Borgward BX7 TS Concept.

Then is the Borgward BX7 Concept

Wow... that's... not at all like anything Borgward was known for. What the hell ties does a derivative SUV have with something like this?

Borgward_Isabella_Coupe_1959.jpg

Good example of a Chinese concern appropriating a trademark and not having a bloody clue of what to do with it. Sad.

In first year a friend had an old Isabella, from his grandfather. Wonderful machine.

Unforgettable are those winter mornings at res when the Mini and Hillman and Anglia drivers ran down their batteries trying to start. I can hear it now ... Cherraverraverraverra x 3. Cherraverraverraverra-verra-ve-ra-ve-ve-e-v-vft. Flatbat.

Jake's old Bogward always had a semi-flat battery. But she always started, even on the coldest mornings. The stroke was so long all she needed was half a crank Ktch-vviv-vrrrrrrr.

We often rode in Jake's Isabella, especially to the Dev. She was indestructible.

I can't imagine a Chinese Bogward being the same.

Borgward to build new factory in Bremen

Revived German marque will build factory in its ancestral hometown as it attempts a European expansion; its first model is due to be launched in 2018

The revived German marque Borgward will build a factory in its historic hometown of Bremen, marking another step towards its return to production.

Work on the new facility is due to start in 2017, with plans to start vehicle production in 2018. The exact location of the factory has yet to be revealed – Borgward says it is in discussion with potential production partners, property owners and the State of Bremen.

Initially, between 50 and 100 jobs are to be created by the new facility. The first phase of development will create an assembly hall with a production capacity of 10,000 vehicles per year.

Borgward produced more than a million vehicles from the 1920s to the early 1960s, when it went bankrupt. But the name was revived last year by a consortium led by the grandson of the original company founder.

The new Borgward is backed by Foton, a subsidiary of the Beijing Automotive Industry Corporation (BAIC), and it has ambitious plans. Headquartered in Stuttgart and already active in China, the decision to build in Bremen is a mark of the company’s intention to expand into Europe, and cement its projected image as a German, rather than a Chinese company.

The first car to be produced in Bremen will be a fully electric version of the BX7, a seven-seat, luxury SUV, which is already built and sold as a plug-in hybrid in China, where it is positioned below Volkswagen’s Tiguan. Borgward has also shown prototypes of further SUVs, the BX5 and BX6, at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. Electric and plug-in versions of the BX5 are already planned for Bremen, and more will follow.

The company recently hired Mini’s former design chief, Anders Warming, who will head up Borgward’s design team from January.

As in the Devonshire Hotel?

As in the Devonshire Hotel?
The same. The basement dive was a student drinking hole of note. Probably doesn't exist anymore. Lion Ale was affordable at about R0.25 a quart, when the Rand was still a Rand.

The "Bogward" (we never said the first R, for some reason, maybe a pun) could self-drive back to res with a full load of vrot students. We all loved Isabella.

I'm quite happy about this. I know nothing of the brand, first I'm hearing of it. However, that SUV, for all it's Cayenne/Santa Fe looks, is a decent looking car, certain to please the SUV-buying crowd.

I'm more excited by the fact it's A) another vehicle brand, meaning more sales competition, and B) going electric, which is a space that needs a lot more competition to promote growth and development.

If they get electric sales up, they will have done something more important than simply reviving a defunct brand.

I previously knew nothing of the brand. As I am a nostalgia lover I done some research late last year & the company disbanded in '61. During its hey day of the 50's if was a very well loved brand in the key markets as well as in SA. I believe there was a dealership in Goodwood as well that shifted a lot of units.

I don't have any Car Mags before '61 so can't pull any road tests of local models.

I do know there is Borgward Club of SA that is very active. Early in this thread you will pics of the old cars from the club members.

I believe their best seller was the Isabella.

Borgward sports car concept previewed ahead of Frankfurt

Reborn German brand looks to be lining up a performance car concept for September’s event

Reborn German car maker Borgward will reveal a low-slung concept car at the Frankfurt motor show in September.

The car has been previewed with a second picture appearing to show its left rear. The image follows a first preview picture of its bonnet. Both shots suggest the model will be a sports car, rather than an SUV, like the brand’s most recently revealed production models. It could preview a future halo production model.

Borgward, which was founded in 1919 but went bankrupt in 1961, returned to the spotlight in 2015 when it revealed its first new model, the BX7 (above). That car is pegged to enter Europe next year, having just received European Union Type Approval; for now, it remains a China-only product.

Work on Borgward’s new European factory is taking place in Bremen, Germany, where the company was founded. The manufacturer aims to deliver 800,000 cars per year by 2020, before ramping up production to 1.6 million cars annually by 2025.

Borgward Isabella Concept

If you look into a rear-view mirror, you generally only see things that are behind you. However, a look back can also generate a vision of the future. That's certainly true of the thrilling Borgward Isabella Concept, which is celebrating its world premiere at this year's IAA in Frankfurt. The vehicle unites the brand's traditional virtues with the attributes of today's Borgward Group AG. Among the outstanding features of the Borgward Isabella Concept are its fascinating design, its revolutionary interior and operating concept, its digital connectivity, and the electrification of its drive train.

Unlike many other studies, the Borgward Isabella Concept is more than just a vision of a future vehicle concept. On the contrary, the main development goal for the reincarnation of the legendary Isabella from the 1950s was the creation of a characteristic design DNA that would serve as the future focus of the entire Borgward company.

Perfect styling: The "Impressions of Flow" design principle

The design idiom of the four-door, four-seat concept coupe is based on Borgward's "Impressions of Flow" design principle, which will be valid for all vehicles in the future. Anders Warming, Head of Design at Borgward Group AG and the driving force behind the Isabella Concept project, said, "The carefully coordinated body shape with its smooth transitions creates a perfect balance between rounded organic shapes and precise lines. Our aim was to create stylistic synergies between beauty and technology."

The Borgward Isabella Concept impresses with its perfect dimensions (5.00 meters long, 1.40 meters high, and 1.92 meters wide) and the beauty of its flowing three-dimensional and sculptural shapes, which are smoothly connected to technical and functional elements such as the cooling air inlets and the aerodynamic components-without any aggressive undertone. Warming is convinced that such an undertone would be unacceptable in an all-electric coupe. "Aerodynamic excellence and efficiency play a key role in this vehicle and define its flowing shapes," he said. "We are convinced that a vehicle body with a perfect flow of air through and around it must radiate accessibility, appeal, and a commanding presence. This is fully in line with Borgward's 'Impressions of Flow' design principle for our future electric vehicles."

A futuristic "graphic tech fade" links the past and the present

The Isabella Concept's harmonious appearance, with its characteristic flowing transitions between the individual body sections, is enhanced by the "graphic tech fade" coloring. The graphic is based on Borgward's diamond-shaped brand logo and is a futuristic interpretation of the two-tone paint job of the original Isabella models. The vehicle's two tones, Zeitgeist Blue1 and Zeitgeist Blue2, fade out in the transition zones between the hood and the windshield, the windshield and the roof, and the rear window and the rear hatch with its distinctive diamond-shaped graphic. In this way, the smooth styling of the Isabella Concept is further enhanced in line with the "Impressions of Flow" principle.

Borgward BX7 2017 review

Should I buy one?

UK sales are in Borgward’s plan, but not yet. It’s up and running in China, but the BX7 was created with global sales in mind, and the firm believes it has created a German car you’d opt for over the established German set and plans to go there first to prove it.

Maybe you’d go for one to be different, but you can be different and buy a Hyundai Tucson, get a better car and still have more than £10,000 left in your pocket. On this early evidence, Borgward has created a solid, old-school 4x4, not a modern trail-blazer that the Chinese car makers planning European launches should seek to follow
