Botched transsexual chooses euthanasia

Nancy Verhelst was the girl nobody wanted.

She was given the storage room above the garage as a bedroom. Her mother told her she didn't want her: "If only you had been a boy."

In 2009, Verhelst, from Belgium, started hormone therapy to become a man. She had a mastectomy and last year underwent surgery to construct a penis.

But the new Verhelst, now named Nathan, didn't like what he saw in the mirror. His body was rejecting the sex change.

"None of these operations worked as desired," he said. "I was ready to celebrate my new birth, but when I looked in the mirror, I was disgusted with myself. My new breasts did not match my expectations and my new penis had symptoms of rejection. I do not want to be a monster."

Verhelst, 44, could not live with his new body and chose to end his life. On Monday, he was legally killed on the grounds of "unbearable psychological suffering".

The man who carried out the lethal injection was Professor Wim Distelmans, who made headlines last year when he ended the lives of congenitally deaf twins who were going blind.

Verhelst explained his decision to a newspaper just hours before his death. "While my brothers were celebrated, I got a storage room above the garage as a bedroom. 'If only you had been a boy', my mother complained. I was tolerated, nothing more," he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

He informed his family of his decision to die in a letter. "I had happy times, but the balance is on the wrong side," he wrote.

Euthanasia is legal in Belgium if certain conditions are met: if those wish to die have made their wishes clear and a doctor judges that they are suffering unbearable pain.

According to official figures, there were 1432 deaths by medical euthanasia in Belgium last year, up on 1133 the year before.

Shame. :(

I hope that mother dies alone in an old age home

At least he had the right to end his own suffering.

Who does that to their own child. Yes, this person did not exactly help themselves by undergoingt he change, but it was only done to please the mother. I hope the mother suffers for this.

I think all people should have this right. Im totally against suicide, but I would rather have somone go in and get injected instead of shooting their family and then themselves, or driving to drive a car off a bridge.

Yes, I think it's important to be able to die in as humane and as painless a way as possible.

Still, hard not to feel as though there could have been a different solution if only she received the right kind of help (from the right kind of professionals or the right kind of friends) from the start, before the sex-change operation even...

Too late for "what ifs" now though.

Makes me so sad to read something like this.

Especially since he/she seemed to be more motivated to have the sex change operation by an outside influence rather than coming from within.

I cant help but wonder how this sex change was allowed to happen in the first place? Unless the article is creating the false impression that the sex change was done to get approval somehow from the mother? If she wanted the sex change purely for parental approval then a psychological eval surely should have denied the request and focused all efforts and giving support and trying to rectify or repair the emotional trauma suffered at the hands of the parents?

Anyway ... as you said .... too late now for "what ifs"

One day the world will wake up and smell the roses.

and in an expected way. nothing is more terrible than losing someone you love unexpectedly, even if you are expecting it for awhile. you can make it a farewell party too, tell that person how loved they are right up until they close their eyes

I can understand it if you have stage 4 cancer but a psychological condition?
