Botswana is in talks with Sweden regarding the purchase of eight Gripen fighter jets from Saab, according to the country’s defence materiel agency.

Sweden’s defence materiel agency (FMV) told SIX News that it is in talks with Botswana on the aircraft, with Linda Bengtsson, acting press officer at the FMV saying on 13 May that “I can confirm that we have initiated a dialogue and that these are regarding, approximately, eight C/D version aircraft.”

The BDF has also expressed interest in the Korea Aerospace Industries (KAI) T-50 Golden Eagle supersonic trainer. A Korean delegation met Botswanan defence minister Ramadeluka Seretse and other BDF officials in November to discuss the T-50 and FA-50 models in November 2013, with talk of Botswana acquiring 16 T-50s.

In October 2015, President Ian Khama visited South Korea and a KAI headquarters. Apparently, Botswana will decide later this year which new combat aircraft it will be buying.

Because ...

Saab in 2014 opened an office in Botswana’s capital Gaborone as it expands its presence on the African continent. Botswana was the third African country with a Saab office after South Africa and Kenya. The group sees big opportunities in sub-Saharan Africa.

and this is just silly now! spent so many billions buying these planes, now what?
sell them for 1/4 of the price? its just sad....

well we also got a slightly used president if you want!

Aren't most of ours in storage? Why not just make a deal with bots, that they can't refuse

Look let's be honest and not cheat anyone, the item is quite worn out but we'll throw in a couple of wives & a few Guptas to sweeten the deal.
 
They will probably pay cash , that country is the best or one of the best run in Africa .

8 planes is not a lot, but one has to have something. One can't just buy them and have them ready to use in a month if things change and you do need something. Its half a average squadron. The USA has nearly a 100 squadrons, and that's JUST the USAF and JUST fighter aircraft...

Agree with you there, my question is why hasn't any leadership come into SA, to teach us how to do things?

I mean they gonna now buy 1/4 price fighter jets, that we shouldn't even have.

Ahh but they just need a few more or a few more operational than their neighbours :-p
 
Angola acquired 12 SU-30k's and I suspect those Gripens might be to counter that.
