Hi guys.

I bought a 2004 Citroën C3 earlier this week, and i think I'm in some trouble. I'm very inexperienced when it comes to the procedure of purchasing/selling a car.

I had the VIN number, engine number and registration number checked and they all came back clean. I then proceeded to purchased the car cash. The owner told me he had the car for a few months now and bought it from a friend of his, and did not get around to put the car on his name. The papers of the car seems to be in order. Here's the problem though. The guy whose name the car is on, is currently in another country.

How do i proceed from here to get the car on my name? Will this be any issue? I'm terrified because i saved up for almost three years to buy this car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

"did not get around to put the car on his name" = ALRAM BELLS

I would never purchase a car if the guy I am buying from doesn't have the registration papers i.e. Title Deeds.

Don't worry, you'll only be convicted of theft. 5 years in prison, max.

No original NATIS document, no deal.

So what would be in my best interest? Go to the nearest police station, report my problem and take the police to the guy who sold me the car's house?

Do you have the registration document at all?

Then all you need is the ID of the person whose name is on the document as well as a letter or invoice stating that it's been sold.

you going to have to get COR before you register in your name. Aske them they normally know someone who can assist.
Had a vehicle from a deceased estate passed from through several people. The person took my details and log book. paid r400 extra and he returned with the log book in my name.
There are people who do this for a fee.

If you in durban PM me and i will get his number.

I do have the registration document, but the guy it is registered to is out of the country with no way of reaching him. This is terrible. I had no idea it would be such a mix up. I think i should go to the closest police station and report this.

dont stress just yet. if the person you bought the car from doesnt want to help or provide id or the phone number stops working. then you are up $h!t creek without a paddle

Bribe an official at the traffic department.

...joking, I have no clue.

Before any panicking, have you even asked the guy who you bought it from to try help you get hold of the registered owner?

I can't believe this. I guess it's my own stupidity and there's a price to pay. In this case the price to pay cost me R28,000 and thtee year's hard work. I trust people far too easily. Thanks anyway to everyone who tried to help. What I'm gonna do is take the car to the closest police station, make a statement of the events and leave it in their capable hands. If i lose the car and money, then so be it. I'm so tired of crooks and dishonest people.

Dont stress. Just go to the traffic department and explain what the situation is. You have a police clearance certificate, so you wont be in any sort of trouble. Might just be an admin nightmare. No need to report to police.

If you have the owners ID, just get these guys who help with registration to help. I have done this before. No stress

The seller should be responsible for getting the registration papers in his name.
Get hold of the seller and tell them to get the ID copy from the original owner so that you can transfer it into your name.

The next fun thing will be figuring out why he had it for a few months and now wants to sell it.

there is no crime that I can see here so I'm not sure what you expect the police to do, this is a civil matter, you need to see a lawyer
