Hi everyone. I bought a car from a dealership that bought it from SMD. The dealership refuses to provide me with proof that I purchased the car. I paid via EFT, have an affidavit that 2 representatives from the dealership, myself and my cousin signed. This affidavit includes all our names and the purchase price of the car. To get Police Clearance for this car, I am required to submit an invoice of my purchase, which the seller claims to not know what I want no matter how many times I have explained to him. What do I do in this case? Please help.

The previous owner is SMD and I have the invoice from them to some other person that this one bought from. So let me try with those and see. Thank you so much for your response.

Probably a code3

Hi Hemi. What is a code 3? I do not know much about cars and purchasing them.

SMD is a scrapyard auction house setup for cars that have been written off.

Code 3 = Written Off.

How you don't know that is beyond me when you already need police clearance for the car....which is not a normal part of any car ownership change. That should have been the dead giveaway.

No SauRoNZA, although the car was nice and fixed when I bought it, I know that it was written off and what SMD does. It's just that I did not know the code.

Why wouldn't they give you a invoice.
Are they scammers or skipping SARS.
In fact threaten them that you'll report them to
SARS
SAPS
Motor Ombudsman
And go viral if they don't give you what is dually yours.
Do it via email so you have record of it and hopefully a response.
Good luck I hope you come right and also be sure to declare it's a code three to your insurer's.

Unless you got a very good deal it's not worth it to buy a code 3. You're also limited to cash buyers when selling as no bank will finance it and some insurers balk at providing comprehensive insurance for them if there's any sign of the repairs being dodgy.

Be very careful if you're in possession of a vehicle which you do not have invoice/sales agreements in your name especially with a code 3.
Oh no! What's the worst that could happen? I have an affidavit signed at Johannesburg Police Station. That's the only agreement. Thank you for your advice

Ask yourself a question - why don't you have an invoice or sales agreement?
