Hi All

I am in the process of getting ADSL installed at home.

I purchased a router (D-Link DSL-2750U).

What happens now? How do I configure the router? Apparently it's a wireless router, does this mean that I can connect to it without any cables? Can I connect other devices (like me blackberry) to it and leverage the ADSL. How do I add devices to it?

Am I reading too much into the config of a router? Is it usually a simple thing?

Thanks

Is the phone line installed already?

If you have the line and you are just waiting for your adsl to be activated then you should receive a notification sms from Telkom when your ADSL is activated. If you selected the self install option then all you need to do is plug your router in to the phone line (follow instructions as in the manual), enter your ISP details in to the router (or use the Telkom guest account if you don't yet have an ISP) then visit the ADSL verify page on Telkoms site: https://secureapp.telkom.co.za/ADSLVERIFY_NEW/

When you have entered your details there your line will be activated and you can browse other sites.

When I had my phone line activated for Telkom Simple deal, I ordered it on Thursday via 10210 call centre and they basically have kept me up to date on when the technician will be sent out for the "installation of ADSL" and he came to install it the next week Tuesday, delivering the wifi router included in the deal (Netgear N300 DGN2200v2 Telkom branded) and setting it up to ensure ADSL functionality. It however was very quick due the fact that I I had a phone line already that just needed to be activated again.

Telkom also provides a quick start guide with their router. I picked up the 3G dongle the next week from their Telkom Direct Store in the Joburg CBD. So far I can say that Telkom has really delivered on every promise they have made to me during this "installation" although the guy at their Telkom Direct Store said they are having a bit of backlog with the free 500MB data on Telkom Mobile. Thanks Telkom, keep up this level of service!

A few sites that might be of interest to you after the installation and activation is this excellent forum (MyBB), plus the following:
Telkom Internet ADSL password management tool

Telkom Internet usage tracking tool

and Broadbandstats Phone exchange search tool

Hope you have a gr8 time with your ADSL. I am. :)

That DLink comes with a setup disk. Connect your computer to it using a lan cable and run the wizard that starts. There you set your Wirless SSID, and passwords, and enter your ISP login details. If the wizard doesn't work, just enter "http://192.168.1.1" in your browser - UN: admin PWD admin (or none, I can't remember). Use WPA2 for your wireless and choose a strong password.

VPI: 8 VCI: 35

Connection type: PPOE (You want to set this in mode).

You can connect any wireless device you have to the router, just remember that the slowest device brings the network speed down.

Once Telkom have notified you that the service is available, do the self-install.

Hi There,
have you placed the order with Telkom for the connectivity?
You will need to do that to get the ADSL connected. You will also need to choose the ISP. The simple packages with Telkom provide fair value for money with telkom as the ISP.
You can also look at Afrihost to place the connection order through as well and they will be the ISP. Their packages are worth looking at as upgrading OR downgrading is easily done with them.

Regards

Tim

I would suggest you call Telkom and have them assist you with your setup. You are paying them for the line after all
