Boundary wall - cost sanity check

Morning everyone

Quick question for anyone experienced with building/contractors work. I'm erecting a boundary wall - 1.5m high, 190mm cement blocks (in stead of double bricks), 10 pillars, 2 galvanised steel and nutec gates (900/1800 width) and 2 nutec palisades. Total length about 25m.

I was quoted around R150k by a reputable builder. Including plastering and electrical work. I have no intention of doing it myself or using a "bakkie builder" so acknowledge that there will be a premium payable.

Very ballpark, does the quote sound reasonable? TIA

Feels a bit $ to me.

I extended my front wall about 25M last year for about 40k using cement block, I then faced it with stone which cost another 20k odd.

Can figure the blocks are about R10 each.

25m x 1.5 x 37.5m
13 blocks per sqm.

13. 37.5 = 487 blocks.

Add another 20% for the pillars as a rough guesstimate, looking at 585 blocks. Lets say 600.
So you're looking at roughly 6k in blocks cost.

Cement, lets say 20 bags, sand 1 cube, so another 3k there.

So, we're at 10k for materials.
Add another 10k for the gate.

20k for materials.

Workers x 3 to knock that out, lets say 1500 a day. Will be about a week and a half of work.
Say 15000

35000 total. Add another 10k for managing, 45k.

Add whatever other stuff you haven't mentioned - electrical - say 10k wire + electrician, 55k
Plastering, can add another 10-15k on top plus materials.

I'd say it should be around half of what you've been quoted. 75k would be fair.

I think you should get more quotes, that seems steep, unless there are other mitigating circumstances you aren't telling us. Like you're on a hill, or they need to move a ton of soil etc.

That's R4000 per sq m. Seems a bit much to me.

Rebuilt both our boundary walls.

Remove old walls and rubble
Rebuild 18m wall with double layer bricks and 6 pillars (all to speck)
Rebuild 12m wall with double layer 4 pillars (all to speck)

Both probably a good 2m high

Paid about 30k per wall including material and labor excluding plastering and paint probably another 5k per all

So job done including plastering for both walls 70k

We did something similar recently. They had to dig and throw concrete footings for the walls as we had existing fences prior to the wall.

Steel was a major cost as well. If using a reputable construction company the cost seems about correct. At least to me it does.

I'm busy getting things in order to build a new house and had a QS do a costing for me. As part of the build I need to construct boundary walls on the front and back of the erf.

QS estimate is R2500/meter for the construction, this excludes electrical and earthworks, these form part of other areas in the costing.

Building costs and products have probably increased insanely the past 2 years. I have seen bricks increasing from R3.70 to R9-R12 per brick in less than a year. The amount sounds about right for what you want to do today.
