I received my Toolfarm purchased copy of Adobe Photoshop CS4 for Mac Retail today. The box only had the DVD jewel case in it with two advertising pamphlets. I've never purchased Mac software from Adobe and Apple usually bundle tons of manuals with their software. Is this correct? No manual?
The box was large enough for a manual and a DVD jewel case and there was no filler of any sorts but the whole thing was vacuum sealed.

Toolfarm is an authorised Adobe (and Apple) reseller.

Anyway the question is, whether Adobe software comes with books or not. :)

I dont recall any printed manuals with PS3 - they were PDFs iirc.

Oh ok. The box was large enough for a manual and the jewel case moved to and fro as you shook the box. Pity. Seems Adobe are cheapskates.

FCP Studio 2 was a huge box weighing 6-7kg full of books. Of course the DVDs also included the manuals in PDF form.

I guess that's the difference between Adobe and Apple. I noticed the same thing with PSE6 - big box with only the disc in. My Aperture came with a 1cm thick book though.

I think you can PURCHASE the manuals at Adobe.com.

Overall my previous experiences with Adobe have been via
Premiere Pro and their associated apps for Windows.
The did issue manuals in those days. I guess Adobe are becoming cheapskates.

The one thing one can say, for video work the bundle that Apple provides
- Final Cut Studio 2 is cheaper but is more professional and contains tools
which cost much more a few years back.

Adobe Production Suite Final Cut Studio 2

Adobe After Effects -- Apple Motion 3 (included), Apple Shake (optional)

Adobe Premiere Pro -- Apple Final Cut Pro 6

Adobe Soundbooth -- Apple Soundtrack Pro

Adobe Encore DVD -- Apple DVD Studio Pro

Adobe?? not included -- Apple Compressor 3

Adobe OnLocation -- Not necessary for FCS 2

Adobe ?? -- Apple Cinematools

Adobe ?? -- Apple Quatermaster (if you have more than one Mac, to distribute the workload)

Adobe ?? -- Apple Color (product which cost $5.000 just 2 years ago)

Apple Shake itself was a $10.000 application until Apple bought it out and now sell it for R4000 (that's what it sells for locally). It has been discontinued though for an upcoming new image compositing app.

I wish Apple would bring out a PhotoShop killer and be done with it. I don't think Aperture has enough features for image editing.

You can purchase whats called "Doc Set" for what ever Adobe product that you have purchased from any Apple Authorised place.

Adobe's Production Premium is also a 6-7kg Box :-p I feel sorry for all the reading video editors have to do :-(

Yes that's all cool but Apple bundles all the manuals inside the box.
The FCP Studio box is also 6-7kg yet probably costs less than Adobe Production Suite (and is more powerful). :)

For sure! No disputing that! FCP rocks! :-)

And as a bonus, they include the manuals. :)

People often say Apple is overpriced, but Apple pro software is best value for money.

Color licence 2 years back was $5000
Shake licence a few years back (and still for Linux) was $9000

LOL... :) Plus FREE printed manuals :)

Agreed. Aperture is cheaper than Lightroom, works just as well and comes with a printed manual.

Does Apple still maintain and/or sell the Linux version?

I admit that they have discontinued the product on all platforms but it's still available for purchase. The Linux version was $9000 while the Mac was $499.
In SA I found Shake for R4K.

http://www.google.com/products?q=apple+shake
Shake 4.1 $139 to $499
Shake 3.5 $1,399 to $2,999

http://www.apple.com/shake/
According to the site Shake for Linux is available at $4999.

Shake for Linux is available through Apple Pro Resellers for $4999.
