A 12-year-old boy drowned after he fell into a stream during flooding in Tladi, Soweto police said on Saturday.

"Four children were playing when one fell into a stream," Warrant Officer Kay Makhubela said.

He said the other children immediately ran to tell their parents what happened. The parents then followed the path of the stream until Protea Glen where they found the body of the boy in the water.

"It's a very long distance," said Makhubela.

The incident took place in the afternoon when the area was heavily flooded.

Makhubela said an inquest docket has been opened. The other children are receiving counselling.

Meanwhile, Johannesburg metro police spokesman Chief Superintendent Wayne Minnaar said heavy rain had caused havoc in other parts of Johannesburg.

A bus full of passengers got stuck in Orlando West and, in a separate incident, a truck driver crashed into a bridge in Germiston. No injuries were reported.

Part of the M1 South highway was also temporarily flooded.
